Hi, I was on this forum a number of years ago when I had a V70 but sold it quit awhile ago. I now have a 2004 XC70 in the stable and will be looking for help as I do some TLC to this car.
for now I have two questions.
1) looking at video on the FCPEURO site for timing belts on the 2004 XC70 I see the video is of a S60 TB change. Will the procedure be the same for the S60 and the XC70? I also notice the tech did not torque anything. Are there no torque requirements for changing the TB?
2) Does anyone know of a service manual for this car or even a DVD?

Same procedure for these cars. There's another video somehow more detailed than the fcp one and the guy talks about the torque settings. Tensioner torque is 15 ft-lbs which is not that much.

Thanks, I remember see this video a number of days ago but couldn't remember where I saw it.
You don't happen to know if the water pump bolts require a torque or not and what the torque value would be if needed do you?

Can you tell me if the pre-load procedure is as follows.
CW until all three marks line up. turn crank another 1/4 turn CW then a 1/4 CCW till the marks line up again.
And, are the torque specs in the link which is for a C70 the same for the 2004 XC70?

The timing belt should not be turned CCW, only CW. Better set the tensioner to center (if the temperature is around 70F) then turn the belt two turns. Then check the tensioner needle is still in the center. This also helps feel if the valves touch in case the belt timings are not properly set. Removing the spark plugs helps turn the belt easier.
What's important with the tensioner is if it needs to be adjusted again, the adjusting procedure must start from zero. I found that having the bolt a little tight helps when adjusting the needle.

Maybe I misunderstood you but are you referring to the 1/4 turn CCW after the 1/4 turn CW after the marks line up? That's what I read and that's what I did for my two 2004 volvos many thousands of km ago.oragex wrote:The timing belt should not be turned CCW, only CW

Yes I believe Volvo specifies to turn the belt only CW.
n.b. In the attachment bellow it says to rather first turn the belt then adjust the tensioner. The guy from FCPeuro rather adjusts the tensioner then turns the belt.

For what year car is the attachment for?
I thought the 2004 had VVT and I thought the procedure was to turn CW to line up the marks. And because of the VVT and before the timing belt is removed the crack had to be turned 1/4 turn CW then CCW 1/4 turn again to the marks then the timing belt could be removed.
Am I wrong on this?
