Volvo Repair Database 2000 V70R - AWD Fuel pump and ejector (Fuel pump 9470674)

Post by scot850 »

Well it is time for me to be schooled! I have been told that the 99-00 AWD cars had 2 fuel pumps. I will now post pictures of the 2 items just replaced on my car, and then perhaps someone can point to me where I am not seeing a pump mechanism on the LH ejector.

So below are various pictures of the RH fuel pump. This has 2 pipes on the cover plate. The RH one looking at the top connects to a pipe on the LH side ejector 'pump'. The LH pipe goes to the fuel filter and then onto the front of the car and engine. See picture RH pump (5).

Below are pictures of the 'Ejector' pump (?) as I was told it was. But looking at it now, I am struggling to see any form of pump in the assembly. All I see is a fuel filter, a level sensor, and an 'In' and 'out' pipe.
The 'In' if you can call it that is the RH pipe in the picture of the top of the pump. A pipe feeds from this around to the fuel pressure regulator mounted above the main fuel pipe and connects to the emissions pipe returning from the engine to the carbon filter. The LH pipe is the link pipe running to the RH fuel pump.

So if anyone can now explain to me where the 2nd pump is, please add notes below. I'm always wanting to learn! Also, now if someone can explain to me why the ejector 'pump' is about 20% more expensive than the main pump assembly, again, let me know.

Hope this is of help to anyone who may be curious.

Great info, my gas gauge isn't showing the proper level and I was wondering if I was going to have to replace both sides. What did you end up paying for both? I looked at just the pump assembly price and almost fell over.

The main fuel pump must draw from both sides when pumping and then just returns it to both sides equally since our fuel tanks are a saddle style and have to have both sides drained at once.

In RWD vehicles, the driveshaft runs straight back, so in some models, mfgs design the fuel tank with a saddle. But the saddle design creates an issue: how to transfer fuel from let's say L side to R side.
Now comes the "ejector pump".

Volvo AWD and BMW E39, E53 models are good examples.

- The main fuel pump is in the first few photos.
- The ejector (Volvo nomenclature) is known as "siphon pump" or "jet pump" in BMW world, is nothing but a few pipes working on Venturi principles. In other words, it is powered by the powered by the energy in fuel flowing back to the tank in the return line.

Strangely the pump is the cheaper of the two. I purchased from Tasca from whom I purchase most of my part in the US. If I recall, the pump was about $330 and the ejector about $370. So about $700 for both parts. The price may be different for a 98 as the system was a little different, and I don't pay any US taxes. Just checked on Vida and looks like the pump and ejector are the same for 850AWD to 2000 V70 AWD of all variants.

You didn't have to pay that much:
1. The fuel pump in AWD model is Walbro, search forum, it is about $100 or so.
2. The ejector is subject to debate. If you always fuel above 1/4, the ejector is useless.

I agree you could pay less, but as I have no wish to remove the rear sub-frame ever again (hopefully) I decided to stump up for the correct parts. If it were a FWD car, then I'd take the chance with the Walbro pump especially as you don't have to pull the whole back end out to replace it.

Neil - amazing thread with your subframe removal saga. Incredibly impressive effort.

Over on v70r I have all the bushings listed in a thread as well as all of the various poly replacements that were from older RWD models if you ever need that info for the future. Additionally another member had a few sets of custom bushings made for the two sets where no poly alternative exists. He and I have installed these on our spare subframes (but I haven't tackled putting it all together yet and doing the R&R).
We also have both drilled out the rear diff 'weep hole' and added the updated angle gear vent there. Hopefully that helps in terms of longevity.

Here's the link to the v70r thread (apologies that many of the pictures no longer are linked):

This thread by Neubar has some better pictures of the bushings:

The AWD fuel pump is indeed a Walbro and I think it's available for $70-100 online. The model is GRJ235 but I don't have personal experience with ordering it.

Thanks for the heads up Will! I hadn't looked at v70r website for this info. I have been doing the various information sharing write-ups as I am trying to help all P80 AWD owners. More info will eventually get posted as time allows and I get to finish the repairs.

Again thanks!

Wow, I swear the more I read on this topic the more confused I get. So is the ejector pump even necessary being it doesn't even have a pump assy and only seems to be a level sensor?

Best as I can see is that the ejector uses system pressure to 'pump' fuel to the other side of the tank so the fuel pump can actually pump it to the engine.
