Hi everyone,
I can't find anything for this in my volvo book, probably a simple answer.
I can no longer get the back of the rear seat to fold down, when pressing the lever the release latch (dont know what exactly to call it) on the passenger side disengages from the mounting post, but the left side does nothing, I'm guessing this is a cable mechanism going to the release latches. I figure the cable is broken or became unattached. Has anyone had this problem before and can help with what to do? Is the plate where the release lever is located the place to start?
any help would be greatly appreciated,
thanks

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.
Sorry for the delay in replying but I have been trying to find a diagram, without result. However, the seat back locking is cable operated and the cables have been known to come adrift at the release lever so I would suggest that you remove that to start. If the cable has come off there you should be able to catch it with pliers and operate the lock.
If it has not come apart there, i.e. it has snapped or come adrift at the bottom end, I have been assured by a Volvo tech that it is possible to release the lock at the bottom end using a large screwdriver. Tip the seat base forward, ease the bottom of the back rest up and you should be able to see the locking catch. He says it can be fiddly but is perfectly doable.
Bill.

I have an 89 240 wagon also and Bill is right.
However my experience is with the Florida heat, my plastic lever/latch has not aged well and the plastic dry and brittle broke in my grip one day when trying to lower the rear seat.
It no longer exists so to get it down, I use a Screw driver (larger one) and tug up on the cable mechanism to release the two lower locking mechanizms.
I pull down on it as if I was trying to pry it out. That I guess gives it enough travel it needs to complete the unlocking position.
Now I need to figure out how to replace that plastic lever if I can find one.

hi guys,
the lever in the back of the seat still works, so I slit the stitch on the back rear of the upholstery and found that there's two plastic plates that are anchored by a plastic post and on mine the cap on the post was broken so the left side would slide off when you pulled the rear release lever...
sooooo, the post is hollow, I packed it with alumniweld two part plumber's epoxy (that grey stuff in the tube) twirled a screw with a large washer on it into the wet epoxy, let it dry for a day, and that worked great... neither pieces slide off now,
worked perfect, now I just have to get something to sew the seam on the seat cover back together...
