I reset my check engine light after I replaced some vacuum hoses and cleaned some connections. Next, I took the car for a 10 mile drive, and the check engine light did not come on.
Does this mean I've fixed the problem? Or, do I have to wait for the computer to cycle through 'x' amount of startups until the dreaded light illuminates again?
If so, how long does one have to wait to see if the problem is still present?
Thank you in advance,
Andrew

Without knowing pre-existing codes, your question can not be answered.durk80 wrote:I took the car for a 10 mile drive, and the check engine light did not come on.
For instance, a fuel pump acting in a intermittent way can bring about various codes.

Thank you for the response! I see your point. The codes I had before I cleared were: 1-1-3 (Fuel trim too lean or rich); 1-3-1 Ignition system RPM signal missing on starting (What does this exactly do?); 2-2-1 Fuel trim too lean at part load.
The reason why I cleared codes was because the guy that I bought it from had done some work to the car. The check engine light was on when I purchased it, and I wasn't sure if he replaced some parts and forgot to clear the codes.
I have been driving the car to work daily for a week (approx. 3 miles city driving) and so far (fingers crossed) the check engine light hasn't illuminated yet.

This car has too many doohickeys that like to malfunction, but I would like to be able to step on the gas and have the car accelerate smoothly instead of feeling like it is pinging or a drop in steady progression forward.
