[2001 C70] Unplugged hose, performance issues

Post by Tommytom »

Hello everyone! It's my first post here, unfortunately I have to start with a question. I am proud owner of really great car Volvo C70 Coupe manufactured in the last days of December 2000 - Model 2001. I own it for about 3 months now.

I had some problems after I bought it. It was idling when the engine was hot. After I replaced all the filters it came back to normal but it's back now. I just cleaned MAF today.

Recently I noticed I have unplugged hose under the hood and really, I can't fit it anywhere. Can someone give me a hint? I recorded short video. I'm also attaching codes returned by OBD:

P1238 - Turbocharger control system flow fault. Flow too high.
P0172 - System too Rich
P0102 - Mass or Volume Air Flow Circut Low Input

Thank You!

It is hard to tell from your video as it took a while to figure it is on the LH end of the motor under the intake hose. There are a couple of possible locations I can think of but the usual rule of thumb is it must be in the area of the length of pipe, and also looking at the pipe it is not bent so it should fit upwards. There are variations of the black intake hose from the air box, but check on the underside of the pipe near the air box for a small tube connection under it. Another place it could be is on/near the end of the same corrugated inlet hose near the PTC (assuming it is a turbo) there can be a couple of connections for the pcv pipes that look about that diameter there.

Can you trace where the ends of the pipes go from the 'T' junction? Even 1 end should help.

After fighting a 2000 V 70 this weekend that hose looks like it should connect to the brake booster. Show us a picture of the other end of that hose as Scot suggested. Nephew picked up his V70 or I would go out to the car and follow that hose.

Thanks for your replies guys! I'll take a look tomorrow in the morning. I'll also try to take couple better photos if needed.

I made another video that shows the "T" connector. Unfortunately I was unable to find where to fit that hose. I also took couple pictures but I'll annotate them first.

If I again see correctly from your second video, the pipe appears to come from the TCV (turbo control Valve) and if it is disconnected, it will prevent the turbo boosting. There should only be 3 pipes from that, and I don't recall there being a 'T' on any of the pipes on any of my turbo V70's. The TCV has 3 pipes and they can vary as to where they go, but normally, 1 goes to the Turbo wastegate/Bypass Valve, one goes to the turbo intake pipe, and one goes to the turbo compressor cover. They are hard to see unless you take the plastic air pipe off to the turbo.

It is possible it is a feed to the brake booster/servo that has come off. That is on a 'T'd' pipe. If that is the pipe it should go to the front of the brake booster and it will be fairly obvious where it fits.

If you go to IPDUSA website, they have a 'how-to' document in pdf format you can look at for the TCV they supply. If you look up our model, or any V/S 70 turbo model you will find it.

I have to quote myself because there is no such thing as useless pipe.

Issues fixed after:
  • Replacement of ETM sensors (Contactless, same as XemodeX)
  • Replacement of MAF (OEM)
MAF showed 55kg/h when idle before I solved all the problems, turned out that previous owner used MAF from Fiat JTD... It's still a Bosch part but nowhere near Volvo C70 requirements. Thanks for all replies!
