Thanks MVS jUst Completed PCV replacement!

Post by plumsmooth »

Actually I am in disbelief that i did it.

I'm calling it 6 hours... 1030-430...

I was 5 minutes from giving up at 1.5 hours into it.
I had been staring down 2 12mm bolts that were visible trying to decide which one was the Second underneath Manifold bolt -- after freeing the Oil dipstick manifold bolt...

Then I decided to feel around underneath and realized it actually was directly underneath!

The lesson of the day was learning to, and accepting, feeling for bolts and threading.
Tell you what though, that far passenger side manifold bolt is a Bitch!
I must have shined a light 10 different angles just to see that side of it. Love the 10mm wobble socket!

The 12mm combo wrench was the savour despite my arms getting greased and scraped.
Once I got the two lower manifold bolts free I had a renewed inspiration and decided if I could take it apart then I would surely be able to put it back together after sniping some hoses and freeing the oil trap.

I had forgot to attach the passenger side small PCV hose to the manifold and had already started bolting it back together. I desperately tried to pull that hose though and stick it on that nipple with no luck...

I had to go backwards a little and my hand was just starting to tremble and I almost gave up for the next day. After getting that nipple on I forgot that I had lost a manifold bolt when removing the manifold for the second time...

Thank god for the magnetic pick-er-upper I bought on recommendation from one of the tutorials!

Then I realized I was too close to quit and remembered all my disconnections and did everything except implement my 1/4 torque wrench to apply final exacting pressure on those manifold bolts.

I was sure the lower manifold bracket would be out of position and that would be my failure, but I was able to hand tighten both lower manifold bolts by hand!

A custom made 12mm wrench for this job might be 2 inches shorter.
A massive dude with think arms might have to go underneath but amazingly I was able to squeeze through those radiator hoses -- without busting them -- and work the 12-mm wrench with about NO room to spare!
And no need to lift vehicle to get from under!

My Volvo sounds a little louder to me at the moment and I am getting ready to try the glove test.
I scraped out what I could out of the two engine ports but was unsure whether I should have cleaned them out better.

Just made a successful trip for beer...

Time to treat myself to an oil change.
And I mean one whereby I go let some one do it!
I think I earned it...

Glove Test Completed...

Strange Results:

Glove is now being sucked in instead of inflating out...

Wow, last thing I expected to see...

Is this O.K.?

My hands are still so dark and greasy I am not sure how to eat dinner tonight...

However I just saved about 700 Dollars the way I see it...

Actually my local dealership quoted me $750, and with their "decided" option of cleaning out my Oil pan, they said it could be up to 1000 dollars or more...

I just took a test drive up to my neighbors -- 1.5 miles and back -- and either I am imagining it, or it literally sounds like my engine is breathing hence the tonal change and slight volume change?

This might be a new thread but:

How would anyone know to replace their PCV?

I got my Aunt's 1997 850 Volvo Wagon with 68k miles in 2006 -- and it looks like it had never been done!

Now at 135,000 I say I am [was] approximately 60 thousand miles overdue!

The 'Free your Dipstick' advice may have saved my RMS!

I guess regular trips to the dealership would be the only way anyone would know aside from the information-road Internet...???

Regarding the glove test: being sucked in is exactly what you want to see happen--negative pressure in the crankcase.

Speaking as one who did blow a rear main seal before learning about the PCV clogging issue, I can only offer my congrats on the work you did. So you are correct as to the value of reading up on what can likely go wrong on these P-80 Volvos.

On a side note, my RMS is now replaced and I'm once again loving to drive my '96 wagon.

Yes, that's how the PCV system is supposed to work.

Nicely done! Took me 8hrs to do!

Accidentally cracked the crankcase breather hose (one that wraps around the block and goes to the turbo) a couple months after the PCV replacement and had to do the whole procedure again to get at replacing the crank breather hose. Let me tell you, much easier the second time around!

Your seals and engine thank you.
