Can you add the Trip Computer info option to a stock S70

Post by msm15 »

Hi I have an S70 glt that didnt come with the trip computer option I have access to the info switch dial/button and would like to know if I can install this and use it in my car. I removed the pannel cover where the switch would go and the cable was already there, I plugged in the info switch but got nothing no difference in the display. Does it need new software or something like that or am I just missing something ?

thanks

Yup, it's a software download on '99 and '00 models (it's a PIN locked programming operation on '98s--VST required). Expensive software, though! Usually software's about $30. The trip software was $190. Part number is 9438259-5 (if your dealer can't find it--you can't order it unless you have VIDA, I did it myself with my VCT when I recently bought a 3 day VIDA sub to help a friend reload his car's network after replacing several computers*).

*Note to the wise: don't weld near the ECUs without removing them and disconnecting your battery. Very bad things will happen to anything that happens to be on the CAN bus. He had to replace: ECU, TCM, UEM, PDM (somehow the DDM was spared) and CEM. I had to reload them, and reprogram keyfobs. 4 hours of stupidity to recode them all . Don't do it. Please!

VST= Volvo Scan Tool. So, yes, it's a dealer only thing unless an independent mechanic happens to have this tool or something very similar (there are some but they are actually even more expensive than the VST) which costs thousands of dollars.

$6,899 to be precise. Just priced one for the garage I take my cars to...make DiCE look like a deal that's for sure. (The garage is going to keep their AutoLogic...gee, I wonder why?)

Well, you can add the trip computer, but you'll have to get a dealer to do the software link-up. It will cost you some dough but not as much as trying to get a VST or other device to do it yourself. Get to know a good Volvo mechanic at the dealer- take him some donuts- introduce him to your daughter.... Maybe you could get him to do it for cheap or depending, for almost nothing.

This is true necromancy, but does anyone know what pin is needed to activate the info switch on a 98?

Easiest way is to swap in a cluster that has the computer already activated. Fast and easy, plug and play.

At this point it is pretty inconsequential what the odometer reads and there are so many out there that you can usually get a decent mileage match without too much trouble, just make a record of the difference so you know the actual miles on the vehicle.

If I ever sold the car, I'd rather not have to have a conversation about why the mileage isn't accurate etc. Also, I've already installed the instrument cluster and would like to avoid putting a second one in. The cluster had 189k and my car only has 106. Lowest mileage car I've had and I just like seeing those numbers :p

A VS member has given me a part number for the pin which supposedly activates the info switch. I'm friendly with a tech at a local dealership, so we'll see what it will cost to get that pin. We already tried three pins which were available on the warranty spreadsheet (remote, locktype and option). I'll update this thread with the results some time next week.
