The rod bearings look pretty grim. How does the crankshaft look?

Agreeing with Lee on the rod bearings. Might as well mic up the crank journals for roundness while you're that far into it. If there's any scoring on the journals, you'll want to have it turned a few thousandths and install oversized bearing inserts.

Notice that the bearing inserts don't have a little rectangular dimple in one upper corner to set into a mating cutout in the rod casting. If you replace the inserts buy a decent quality of inserts that have that dimple, especially if you plan to juice up the power. That little dimple on each half shell will help to resist spinning a bearing at high rpm.

The crankshaft should be mirror smooth and shiny and, of course, perfectly round :)

A couple of other points that you might find helpful:
- use a tap to clean out the threads in your engine block
- for the end bolts on your oil pan b/c they will have some thread lock or sealant in them that can
prevent proper tightening
- likewise clean out the threads on the firewall side of the head where the coolant pipe flange bolts on.
- to complete that prep for proper torquing of bolts, clean the threads on the bolts.

- using engine degreaser and shop towels or rags, wipe out all the cylinder bores until the rags come clean
then use a ball type hone to rough up the cylinder bore surfaces so the new piston rings will chafe in properly. If you skip that step, the rings won't run in and oil and compression can slip past.

Details!
