Hey guys- I've been having a problem with smoke coming out of my oil filler. After driving for a few miles I notice smoke puffing out of my engine at a pretty good amount when I take off the cap. I have been running rich(p0172) and I'm wondering if my fuel injectors could be leaking causing my engine to burn the excess gas thus causing the smoke?
I did the pcv during the start of summer so I don't think that is the case.
Also, upon start up I have the engine oil light illuminate for about a second or two then it goes away.
All help is greatly appreciated, thank you!

If your getting a large amount of volume out of the dipstick or the oil filler then either your PCV system still has a clog somewhere or you might be getting a bunch of blow by on your rings. When you did the PCV system what all did you replace/clean?
Might be worth doing a compression test to see where your numbers are.
My oil light usually comes on for a half sec during crank and then goes right out, if your seeing it for a couple seconds it might be your oil filter draining back or it's time to change out the o-rings on your oil pickup.

I purchased a complete kit from ipd. When I went to do the pcv there was surprisingly little gunk in the ports and the hoses themselves looked pretty clean.
If I were getting blow by wouldn't I have oil pooling up underneath my spark plug cover? I thought that could be it but I had my cover off for the last few weeks and have seen no oil on top of the block at all.
I will do a compression test tomorrow and post the results. Hopefully that can give me some information.

161k , When I did the pcv at 155k everything looked really clean surprisingly. That's why I was wondering if bad injector/s could be causing the problem. When I place a glove over the oil filler port it tries to suck the glove it which also leads me to believe the pcv isnt an issue.
The engine does seem to get very hot and could be burning the oil but the temp gauge has never moved past the normal position. Is it possible to burn oil and not have the gauge move?

So your real question is whether there is an excess of hot oil vapor coming out.
If you have vacuum at the filler when covered, PCV is good, keep in mind that when you remove the cap, the vacuum dissipates. It will pull air in, but also allow a chimney effect for heated air and vapors. Doesn't sound like you have a problem at all. My 04 XC90 has a baffle in the filler, probably for that reason.
As far as the oil pooling in spark plug valley, that would be from a bad cap seal or cracked upper engine PCV hose. And excess fuel should cause black smoke out the exhaust, not through the PCV

2004 XC90 T6 AWD: 186k, 60 on transaxle ( traded in )
1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)

Thanks for the helpful information FLXC90, I was unsure of the normality of that. As for the excess fuel there is no black smoke out of the exhaust which is what is confusing me. I definitely am running rich but I don't smell the gas burning or have black smoke.
Thanks for your help.
Thanks for your help.

Have you tried clearing that code, and see if it comes back? As for the PCV, I'm +1 on FLXC90's opinion - I don't think you've got a problem there. Check your filler cap gasket and replace if it's hard or cracked. Those gaskets are known to fail and cause frantic troubleshooting of the oil-pooling-on-top-of-engine-syndrome.
