1988 240 wagon won't start

Post by redfish »

Hello. I recently bought a 1988 240 wagon with an automatic transmission. The seller told me that the car sometimes does not start in warm weather. Sure enough, the car starts fine when it is cold outside, but sometimes will not start when the weather is warmer than 55 degrees. Warmer than 55 degrees, the car may or may not start. Humidity does not seem to be an issue. The car turns over, but will not start.

The previous owner put in a new distributor, new coil, new fuel filter, and new battery. I have done the following:

replaced the timing belt

replaced 25 amp fuel pump fuse(it was still good, but I replaced it anyway)

checked to make sure the in-tank pump is working

replaced the fuel pump relay(twice)

From what I've read here, I was sure it was the fuel pump relay, but it's not, unless I bought two faulty relays.

All the ceramic fuses are in good shape.

The radio is an aftermarket stereo that was installed approx 5 years ago. Looking at the fuse box, there is a wire(it looks like stereo wire) going from fuse #1 to fuse #4.

When the car starts, it starts the first time I turn the key, it idles smoothly, and runs great.

The car shows 178,000 on the odometer, but it's broken and the previous owner estimates the mileage closer to 200,000.

If anybody has any ideas about what the problem could be, I'd appreciate the help.

Bill

check for spark when cranking, check for gas in cylinder. (check for pulse on injectors) go from there if no spark check for ac volts from distributor when cranking (not much just some ac voltage from the two wires from distrubutor) Spray crank pickup with cold spray, then try dist pickup with cold spray until you find component that is not working when hot. See if car starts when you unplug air mass sensor. (limp home mode) Let us know what you find. See if you are getting proper pressure from fuel pump.

I unplugged the air mass sensor, and I was able to get the car to start. I plugged the air mass sensor back in, and the car started right up. I guess I'll get a new air mass sensor.
