Don't confuse the chipped key that let's the car start with the other problem that's being suggested here.
If the car starts and runs, your key enabled immobilizer system is just fine. If that key isn't near the ignition
switch, your car won't run at all. It would start for about 2 seconds and quit, so it sounds like that system's OK.

What's more than likely happening, as everyone else here is pointing out, is that the electrical switch that's
being turned by key IN the ignition, is worn out. Waaaaay common with these cars as they age. That's why
it's been suggested that you shake, jiggle and wiggle the key when things get funky. If the dash lights settle down,
it's pretty much a lock that you'll be spending about 50 bucks for a new electrical contact block that attaches
on the back side of your ignition switch.

There are boatloads of posts here at MVS about this problem and how to solve it. Here's a good one:

If you have to decide between the electrical key part and food, you can sometimes clean the contacts on the old switch and improve things for a bit. Definitely pull off the switch and inspect.

You must remove the negative battery cable before starting this job! This prevents fires. You will need a radio code to turn your radio back on but we can help, here if you've lost that

Just wanted to update quickly... The lights came on again this afternoon and jiggling the key didn't help.

Okay, next thing to do is get the codes read, and we'll go from there.

See this concurrent thread for another possible cause.
