How to aim passenger side low and high beams upward?

Post by jh_on_the_cape »

2006 V70 FWD nonturbo
The passenger side headlight is very dim, and it's aimed very low. So is the high beam.
I want to aim them higher to see if that solves the dim problem. I might just put in a brighter bulb.
I do not see anything in the car or on the internet on how to aim the beams....
Any help?

There should have two bolt/ screw on top. You may adjust it.

It may be aimed right but the reflector has tarnished. Pull up near a white wall or garage door to check

Thanks. I shined the lights on our garage door at night and both low and high beams are definitely too low.
I cannot find the adjustment screw? Is it hidden or obvious?

These are hard to reach and hard to turn if they got stuck. You have to turn both at same time, I believe they turn in opposite direction.

Or you may have the automatic level adjustment and in that case is quite normal for the little electric motor to fail.

For the bulb itself, old bulbs dim, perhaps it's time for a new H7 if it has regular bulbs.

How can I tell if I have the auto level adjust?
I looked at that link and the picture. Is that the passenger or driver side?
I was going to put in a new bulb, but that side is dim on both hi and low beam.

OK I found the adjustment knobs. On the drivers side I turn it and the light goes up and down.
Passenger side I turn it and no change which makes me thing the little gear in there is bad and the light is just shining down.
How do I replace that little piece? Or even superglue it into the right position? Car has 170k and we go skiing now and it's pretty dark on the way home.
Thanks.

Are there two adjustment knobs at each headlight? I remember on my model I had to turn both knobs at same time (much easier to say than to do) or the light would not move. Don't quite understand the mechanics behind it, though. Also is good to verify the bulb is properly seated (the two knobs appear at the left of the picture at 0:53)

Yes when you spin the top one, the side knob also spins by itself.
I messed around with it and I am sure that those adjustment knobs do not work. The housing they move is facing all the way down, and when I turn the knob it spins in and out but does the housing does not move. I compared it with the other side.
I think however that adjuster connects to the housing is broken. I really hope that does not mean I have to replace the entire assembly.

This video shows it well

Took it to the local volvo guy and he says I have to change the entire headlight assembly. Which takes like 2 hours. I found a YouTube video of the process and it's beyond my comfort zone.
Mechanic said to look on ebay for the light.
