Got the car back from Gengras Volvo. Charged 4.5 hrs labor plus $730( including my VCOA discount!!!) to just troubleshoot ECC module replace same and leave blower, power stage on floor and leave headliner, overhead light panel, temp sensors hanging for me to put back. Oh ya, the glove box must be put back also. This puts a very sour taste in ones' mouth for the dealer and the brand. The voice of DIY's, I hope, carries some weight at cocktail hour when the subject turns to cars. This is a very unpleasant experience.

The heater blower fan on our 1993 volvo 850 GLT sedan has stopped working with flashing ac/recyl air lights when car is turned on. The fan is brand new OEM from dealer recently installed. The fan would come on every now and then for a few secs then goes off, but once it stayed operational for a few days without fail. We have been having a mild winter this yr in PA so i did not feel the urgency to deal with it. However, last few days with plummeted temperature the problem can not be ignored any longer. The fuse is still in working cond. and the fan does work. From the postings I read here the problem may be due to a faulty resistor pack. I would be grateful if any of you could provide me with direction on how to get at the resistor pack (if you agree with me) that controls the heater fan blower for replacement.

Thank you in advance!

Man, that sucks the big donkey you-know-what.
Take it back and ask to speak to the service manager. They slapped you around, raped you and then threw you out in the desert with no water.
I wouldn't touch anything myself- you paid to have the repair done...I would guess way over a grand and this???

Sorry for my ranting....I hate this treatment by dealers- the main reason I do a bunch of stuff myself.

I'll let others answer how to get to it, but don't buy the part from the dealer. We'll help you get a part number and then either buy a used one (still warranted) from www.erievovo.com (call them, don't email them) or from fcpgroton.com (also call them as this is most likely not listed on their site).

Problems with ECC on 1995 855 Turbo wagon.

I have had work done already on the AC system a few years ago... many changed parts. Just the other day I was going to work and hot air is coming out of the AC - dash.

The fault codes I got are 2-1-1 and 4-1-9. When you switch the air conditioner on you just hear the relay kick in but not the compressor. Fuse 31 is ok.

I connected the AC compressor directly to the battery and It kicked in cooling the cabin just great. I checked the blue AC relay and it's ok. Not sure what it is and can't find a electrical diagram to check things.

I love my wagon...

The only problem I have with my AC is 4-1-8 before I cleared the codes I had 1-3-5, 4-1-7, and 4-18. What do these all mean especially 4-1-8 cause all the others cleared. My AC system doesn't do anything makes no noises or anything. I replaced the climate control unit with a newer one and nothing I assumed it was the blower motor but I have no idea.

I believe Lee answered you on the other thread. Good luck figuring this thing out.

MadeInJapan wrote:The temp sensor/fan motors above the doors are very easy. Click down the tabs on the grab handles to reveal the screws. Undo these and take the grab handles off, then you'll be able to see what's going on. The sensor/motor has a connector that you can take it loose from and then the entire contraption can come out for cleaning, lubing etc. That's all it might require.
MIJ - this is above the door and not in the door - right?

I have similar issues with my '95 Volvo 850 turbo w/ ECC. I pulled the codes:

4-1-4 Driver's side interior temp sensor inlet fan seized.
4-1-7 Passenger's side as 4-1-4.
4-1-8 No control signal to blower fan power stage.

I fixed the driver's side temp. sensor. I tried to fix the passenger's one but it worked for a while and then the little fan stopped working again.

Unfortunately, 4-1-8 will not go away. I checked the blower motor and it works when shorted to ground (is draws 12 A at 12 V). I have checked the power stage by removing and testing the MOSFET inside which seems fine. I have also checked the continuity of the connection between the power stage and the ECC and it's fine. I have even opened the ECC but didn't see anything out of order.

What else could I do to figure this out? Should I replace the power stage or the ECC control unit? Suggestions??? :?:
I didn't want to buy and replace parts that still work!

Thanks!

How did you check the MOSFET? They fail in one of two modes, the will either short out source to drain (The fan runs full blast all of the time) or it opens source to drain and acts like a very good insulator (the fan won't run at all). It is easy to check the a shorted MOSFET with a DMM but not so easy on an open one or a good MOSFET since most DMMs don't have enough voltage to test across the gate.
