98 V70 whats a good fuel filter?

I'm not in a rush to do the filter. I am trying to squash an emissions code and I want to replace the rubber hoses coming off either side of the roll over valve. The emissions code is driving me crazy and I'm sick of seeing and clearing the check engine light and having it return so I'm in a hurry to fix that. I think that removing the fuel filter will make it easier and its time to replace the filter anyhow. I have time to do it tomorrow, otherwise it will be weeks before I can get to it.

What I've learned this morning is that almost none of the stores here stock anything I would put on my car other than the Purolator. As a rule, I seldom buy anything other than fluids or filters from the auto parts store and usually only from NAPA if I'm going to do it. Walmart has the best price on oil and fluids so I usually purchase those there if I can find what I want. I quit using FRAM products 10 years ago when I found out that their oil filters had a plastic bypass valve that probably fails before the filter is replaced and are glued together on the inside with hot melt glue.

There is way too much junk out there. If you want to purchase junk for your vehicle there are many ways to do it. A low price in a retail brick and motor store almost always means JUNK.

I can get a Bosch for a reasonable price from Advance but the process is a bit of a pain. Oddly the dealership has two filters and the getting the correct one involves knowing the VIN because its apparently emissions related. None of the auto parts stores require a VIN to find the part which makes me wonder about it.

Dealer wants vins for anything because they want to make sure you absolutely get the right part. If it is a filter with 5/16 inch on both end, it's the right filter.

There are two part numbers for the 98 V70:
30671182 and 30620512 you need either the emission code or the VIN to choose which one. The illustrated parts list has pictures of both parts and they are distinctly different. One part is 10 dollars more than the other. So, as I said, it makes me wonder...

There were a lot of changes during the 98 year for emissions related items.

I know exactly which one "I" need. You can get the vin or get under the car and see which one you need. Vin would also be on you insurance/registration papers.

By the way, when I buy a part from the dealer I go in and tell them the part number I want. I generally don't rely on them to get it right because often they make mistakes.

I'm not wondering what I need. I know what I need. I wonder because when you go to the auto parts store they only have one to choose from and I believe either filter probably fits any 98 V70. Clearly either the auto parts store or the dealer is wrong and I doubt its the dealer.

Anyhow, I'm out. Thanks for the information. I originally just needed some idea of where I could buy a quality filter in a store. In the meantime I've determined that in Atlanta you really can't unless you want to wait a day getting it

To finish off this topic, I ended up buying an OEM filter from the dealer or about $3 more than the auto parts generic one. I could have bought a Bosch at Advance or Carquest IF I went out of my way on my drive home and ordered it and paid for it. They would have had it by today after lunch. Purolator was available most places but after learning the OEM number depended on the VIN I didn't really want an after market filter.

What I learned at the dealer is that the 98 year does in fact take two different parts depending on the VIN. The parts guy brought them both out and showed them to me. They are different but it looks like either would fit. I think the one currently on my car is not the correct part. A filter is a filter so it probably doesn't matter much. But the pressure drop across the different filters may be different, so I would guess the OEM style would deliver optimum performance. The different filters may also just be a result of a parts change with no impact on performance at all.
