I've watched several videos and read "the" 850 blog and I'm not even sure if
I can see the flame trap without removing the intake manifold - I have been
a bit rushed. I'll do more research soon.

I'm thinking the top breather hose might be the easy way to feed some Seafoam into
the PCV system.

Flame trap is a plastic disc with holes in it, relatively easy access, the red piece here:

not to be confused with the oil trap:

OK so I think I see the flame trap and it seems that if I remove the intake
snorkel then I can remove it without removing the intake manifold. Also
the rubber hose might be a good spot to pour in some Seafoam. Then I'll
warm it up and change the oil.

They estimate that they are needing to add a quart every 1000 miles but
can't figure out where it is going. I assume that it is being burned but will
also look underneath for any leaks/drips. Not sure if I can get my hands in
there to check for cracked PCV hoses.

REmoved the air box cover, and large flex tube and I see the flame trap, was
able to turn it and open it. Not sure how to get the flame trap out, not easy
working in that limited space.
There is a lot of seepage around the housing and it is wet with oil on top of the
transmission. The small hose connecting to the housing is cracked off.

Can I plug it until we get around to doing the PCV system, will it help in anyway?
Is there a vac leak with it open? I'm asking about the leak to the hose is that
going to leak oil or vac? The housing side obviously is air.

I should get a shop manual, seem to recall one online.

I have large diameter heatshrink tubing and I have a heat gun!
I'm going to try rejoining the cracked small hose just to get by until the PCV
is done.

Apologize for so many questions, but does the flame trap twist lock
turn out, or is it just pressed in? It doesn't want to come out.

The connector that it mounts in is a bayonet style mount that twists a bit to get it to release. The flame trap itself is just pressed in but they are typically covered in crud and they will fight with you a bit to pry it out. Most of us just take it out and throw it away so you can get rough with it if it is stuck.

Ended up drilling two holes then using large needle nose pliers to pull.
Thanks, it is out.
I wasn't able to get any heat shrink in there so I just plugged the line going
down to the oil system in the hopes of not loosing as much oil.
Getting cold today, just about 40 degrees.

So clearly, it needs the PCV job.
