2005 xc90 2.5 t Emergency Brake Issue

Post by 2005xc90t »

Hi All,

I've searched the net for this problem before posting, and had little success. My parking brake does not hold, so I decided to replace the shoes after trying to adjust the cable with no avail. I took the old shoes off, cleaned everything up, and installed the new Bosch ones I got. Well, the rotor will not fit over these pads. They are identical to the old ones, just thicker pad. I even bought new rear rotors, and they still will not go over the pads. The adjustment seems to be off, and the only thing I can see holding these back from fitting is the metal link that holds the pads together. It seems too long and it's spacing the pads too far apart if that makes sense. I see something on ebay called an adjusting link for Volvos. Has anyone had this issue? Maybe I'm missing something?

Thanks! :?:

I just wrote it up below.
Make sure you undo the adjuster tension a bit. It will make installation easier.

Great detail and pictures! Thanks!. Unfortunately I could not get the bosch pads to fit. They were just too thick and would not go in the rotor. I kept the old pads, because they actually looked fine. I'm thinking the cable is stretched or not adjusted properly. I tried to adjust a while ago but it was difficult. Is there any sure way to tell if and where the cable is bad/stretched? Thanks.

When it comes to Parking Brake, no matter what car I own, I only use:
- The mfg OEM (Volvo OEM) shoes
- The mfg OEM (Volvo OEM) hardware, springs, expander etc.

- Alternative for shoes: Textar, Pagid, ATE and nothing else. This is simply b/c other mfg's do not have the same tight tolerance for the shoe thickness.
The shoe thickness is crucial b/c:
* Too thick: can't install the shoes.
* Too thin: can't adjust the parking brake.

Parking Brake, in general, is very very finicky. The regular brake pads are more forgiving, not the brake shoes.

I installed adjusters to make it easier to adjust them because the one in the center console just doesn't work right.
