Heater Core

Post by adbalt »

I'm in the process of replacing my heater core on a 98 Volvo S70. The heater core i bought did not come with a foam strip to install and is not quite as wide as the original. Two questions: 1.) What does the foam strip do? and 2.) Any advice on what type of foam strip I should use?

Thanks for the help.

The foam strip ensures that the air passes through the heater core fins and gets heated. Without foam the core will be less effective because air can just scoot around it.

No good suggestions for a foam alternative, I haven't had to do that, but I'm sure someone else will chime in.

The infamous "Euro" core came with really thin foam.
I peeled it and replaced it with a thicker, adhesive
backed weather stripping foam. I had to trim the
thickness a bit at the tank seams, but it works well.

Yes, you can get foam strips with adhesive backing from Home Depot. Won't be perfect but better than no foam.
