95 Volvo 850 GLT Heating Issue

Post by BlackyChan91 »

I have a 95 Volvo GLT 2.4... I have noticed that when I have the fan switch all the way to the max or any other position I don't get any air blowing thru the vents... I do get heat from the defroster but it takes forever to heat up and blows minimally... I'm just wondering if its the heater core itself, the blower motor/resistor or something more sinister... I have a thermostat I am putting in this weekend... maybe that will help in some part

Thanks

If you can't feel anything coming out of the vents then chances are you have stuck damper. A bad blower resistor will typically result in no fan at all - as in that you can't ever hear it come on. There are two damper vents that control the air flow and if one gets stuck then it can result in air being forced into the system by the fan but all of the outlets being blocked.

Is this an electronic or a manual control? The electronic version has settings that say AUT and the temp is set by degrees. The manual system has no AUT settings and the temperature is shown as varying width red bars with no numbers.

Turns out the vents were closed... Now all I get is cold air no matter whether I'm on hot or cold setting and still just one speed... I put it on high and it doesn't come out any faster.... :-\

Have you replace the cabin filter, take it out and see if the air flow improves. If not, you need to check the blower motor or resistor.

As a dedicated fan of sound damping, I'll tell you it's not easy to get the volume down on these blowers... I have lightweight foam in nearly all spaces in my 850 (as well as other stuff on metal surfaces), and the sound level is far lower now than when I first got the car. In the under dash spaces where the ventilation system is, you have to be careful not to hinder the actuator arms which move back and forth, and you also have to be careful so that the electronics in there have air circulation.

Try closing all covers tightly, and covering the inside of them with foam and/or vibration dampeners. Use lightweight foam sheets that are purpose made for auto sound damping, and cut them precisely to your needs. It's fiddly in there, and a lot of the blower motor sound will be carried by the air ducts anyway, so expect only small to medium benefits for several hours work. :)

Edit; if you really want to get crazy, you can get PE foam air ducts made to replace the OEM ones. That will cut air flow noise by 5-10 %... but the expense is hardly worth it. ;)

How old is your fan motor? They can get noticeably noisier as they get older and the bearings get loose.

Try just lubricating the fan bearings and see if that helps at all.

Also I have had OE and aftermarket fans' and some of the cheaper ones can be very noisy.
