I talked to a person with access to Volvo's bulletins, manuals, etc., and he could not find any specific install literature.
Thank you so much for enquiring.

I showed at that OEM Volvo dealer's site how their website can show both part numbers...question is, does OEM Volvo have a problem with their part numbers?
I surmise that the design of the mudflaps was changed. The newer design will fit (it seems) all models of 940 and 960 (perhaps 740, 760 too) so no need to continue selling the older part number. Part of their catalog did not get updated, it seems and still shows the older part number.

I am guessing that another error resulted in the newer mudflaps not being compatible with the new fender lining introduced around 1995 for the late model 960 and then the V90 and S90. So the new mudflaps will not fit the new models without something being modified.

I would have the Volvo OEM you bought it from to call Volvo's tech department. Was poster "lummert" correct that a missing piece is needed? I'll see what can be done. They were bought on my behalf in the UK (by someone who deals in Volvo bits and knows Volvos inside out) from his OEM supplier. I'll ask him to make that inquiry.

I have no idea what is the part "24" identified by "lummert". I think Lummert was asking what it was, rather than suggesting it is needed. My guess (but just a guess) is that it was a piece intended to be fitted in the event of mudflaps being removed. It does not seem to appear in the list of parts currently available. Another guess is that it might be a steel strengthening piece to go behind a plastic fender and have the mudflap rivetted to it. (No need for strengthening if rivetting to a steel fender, such as on a 940.)

I will have another look and see if putting a spacer between the mudflap and the fender might resolve the problem of the mudflap not going into place correctly. But I think that, even if it did work, it would look horrible.

V90's are ultra-rare in France so I don't hold any hope of finding one fitted with mudflaps and looking to see how they have been fitted.

In United States, we have Craigslist, where people sell everything.

There are two search engines:

1. SearchTempest

2. Search all of Craigslist

I would use 1998 V90 Volvo as the search term. In the SearchTempest, you have to use a Zip Code, use 98101, which is Seattle, Washington

I did some searching on Craigslist and Google, and all vehicles I saw did not have mudflaps.

Here's a V70 with mudflaps.

V90's or S90's with mudflaps may not be common but they exist.

Thank you for this post. There are those of us here in the USA - and elsewhere, of course - who love the V90/960 cars. I also believe it to be among the best Volvos ever produced, and believe that these will be travelling the Earth after the apocalypse. Joke!

It would be great if there were a place for all of us B6304 admirers to gather and talk, but alas, we are fewer and fewer.

Just recently there was a super-rare Coral Red V90 sent to the scrapper near me. I wanted so desperately to save it!

Thank you for your comment. Yes, the V90 is a beautiful car - the final and most splendid flowering of the Volvo rear wheel drive cars.

I finally resolved the mudflap mounting problem. It seems that the plastic rear fender liners of my car were incorrectly installed at the factory. This did not prevent them serving their purpose as liners but it prevented the mudflaps from going into their place.

The liners are secured in their place by two self tapping bolts. The edge of the each liner should be behind a steel piece at the lower part of the rear fender but in my car they were in front of it. With the bolts removed, the fender liner could be moved into its correct place, behind the steel piece. With the bolts then replaced, it was a quick and easy job to drill the holes for the two pop rivets and the bolt for mounting the rear mudflap in its place.
Liner is now behind the metal piece.

I have a V90 with mudflaps installed by the dealer. But just because they were installed by the dealer does not mean it was done right. They is sloppy. Over the 18 years I have had my car, the car was always serviced by the Volvo dealers. I've only started repair and maintenance myself lately, and I have found some damage done by the dealers, and evidence of sloppy work.
