Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

The 2005 S40 does have a fuel filter which should be replaced at 120,000 miles. If the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) has the numbers 38; 39; 64 or 68 at the 6th and 7th numbers the filter is not replaceable.

Having done a further check the US model 2005 S40 only has a choice of three engines: The B5244S4 (VIN 38); the B5244S7 (VIN 39) and the B5254T3 (VIN 68) so yours will have a non-replaceable filter.

The fuel lines are high pressure lines and I would not advise cutting into them to install a filter. It would appear that on these cars the fuel filter does not need to be changed. Hopefully someone with more knowledge on this fuel system will be able to help.

No filter. Many places on-line will sell you a filter that is supposed to be for this car, even a Volvo dealer, but there is no place for it. I'll sell ya mine that's been sitting on my desk for 2 months. Volvo part #31271607

I have a 2005 Volvo V50 T5 AWD with the B5254T3 (VIN 68). If there is no fuel filter to replace then what? How does it clean fuel? I am just curious how it works. Is there anything that can fail at any time that would need replaced?

It's in the tank. I believe you only change the filter if you replace the pump because you have to drop the tank.
