I am thinking I have some sort of missed connection somewhere. The car ran drove A-OK yesterday, and now I cannot even get a single turnover when trying the key. not like a dead battery where the engine turns but won't start (although I did try and jump start the car)
I just tried leaving the battery disconnected for a bit, then cleaning the green connection at the key ring area, to no avail.
I have fuel rail pressure, lights, clock and radio turn on and off fine. I must have a short or something where the electrics are not letting the ignition produce the spark?
I replaced the fuel filter, have 1 of 3 fuel pump relays that all seem to work fine in Aug2014. New battery last month.
looking into ignition switch electrical portion - please post any threads
I also spoke with JRL months back and he warned of an issue he noticed on my car about there being a crack in the plastic button on my gearshift knob.

Not heard that issue before kahl, but another potential fix to store away for the future.
The only reason that I can think the crack in the gearshift (auto) may cause a problem is if it causes the button to stick and therefore not engage the pnp switch to allow the car to start. Have you tried to see if the car will start in Neutral? Haven't tried it but can't recall if these cars will. The issue may be more noticeable if the button is sticking is if you can move the gearshift without depressing the button. Try rowing the gearlever back and forward and return to Park and see if it makes a difference.
Gearshift knobs are usually easy to find in PnP yards. Easy to swap. Twist the shift gaiter at the top to disconnect it from the knob. The pull hard upward (watch your face!!) and it should come out. Replacing is the reverse. IPD sell an aftermarket shift knob button to replace the original:

Having done this it is a little tricky to do, but works.
Hope these suggestions are of help.
Neil.

I am going on notes from several years ago so please bear with me....by the left strut tower there is a connector with green/red wire sticking out of harness- run this to the "plus" battery terminal as this will go direct to starter cranking the starter. Key is in position 2. If it does not crank then PNP switch or starter is bad. Can someone confirm this?
To test starter use a screw driver between the solenoid terminal and the large nut that the battery cable connects. Just one bump to see if the starter engages. Try to eliminate items in the chain by making them work. Plus the gearshift rowing as Scott pointed out, worked every time on a 94 850.

I hope the OP has tried the gearshift rowing, in attempts to get their problems straightened out. Especially since they were having trouble getting the key out. maybe their issue is just a button fix.
Unfortunately, it did not work for me. I will now be trying to determine if it is the starter, the starter relay, or the ignition.
Thank you for the suggestions so far.

Ok, so this may be a silly question, how do I get the black starter cover off? I can barely wiggle my hand to it. To reach it and perform some tests as in RSPIs video seems tough, a bit different on the '00 XC? Should I be reaching from underneath?
I am looking to perform some last ditch efforts in testing the starter, starter relay, and ignition switch, but I am an electrical ignoramus.
I don't want to be connecting harnesses to the battery as a guess.

Scour the inter webs for a wiring diagram (they are out there, but we can't point to them here by legal agreement) and see if your 2000 has a starter bypass wire in the engine compartment - you can try jump starting it there to see if that diagnoses the problem.

So I have removed the need for chipped key on 04 s60, next is the c70 2004 also
Going to perm mount chip on antenna coil on each car.
Then chipped keys not needed and can install simple remote start if I want to.
Right now it seems c70 is sensitive to key to antenna distance. similar cars may be distance sensitive also. I use same coil near chipped key when not on ing switch and seems distance could make it fail
s60 was able to tape ship to coil with no issues at all

After Cleaning the immobilizer ring contacts, I have not had any starting issues for two months.precopster wrote:Clean the antenna ring connector which is located behind the steering column covers. This would definitely give these symptoms. You need a really thin torx driver such as those cheapies which are attached to a screwdriver type of handle, so your torx socket doesn't get stuck in the holes leading to the torx screws.
Thanks!
