01 V70XC LH CV axel removal

Post by sparky65 »

First of all, I have read every post that I can find on removing the LH CV Axel on a V70XC. I've replaced more axels than I can count but I've never had one kick my a$$ until yesterday. So here it is, my last ditch effort before I drop it off at a local indy shop.

It won't pop out of the trans. Yes, I have tried the cold chisel trick. I did not have the craftsman 5/8" chisel so used my 3/4" one that also fit well in the gap. No, I wasn't shy about it either. Tried my largest pry bar too and it still won't pop. I haven't done anything (yet) that isn't reversible as this is my daily driver.

Any final advice/tips/tricks before I declare defeat?

Go under with wood and an attitude. It needs more of a pop than a pull, IMHE, which is limited

Oh yeah! Got plenty of both. I'll go after it again this weekend or next, just don't want to be too hard on things. Never had one stuck like this before.

The thing that seems to work the better is to turn a little the axle, then pry again. It seems the clip inside would give up easier when in a certain position. Other than that I was very lucky to pop mine only with the 'chisel' end of the wheel lug wrench that sits in the trunk.

How about cold chisel + floor jack that slowly jacks it up?

Thanks for the suggestions. I did try turning the axle several times to find the sweet spot but no luck. I think that it is an aftermarket shaft and that the circlip is probably a cheap one with sharp edges.

Any opinions on the quality of the DSS shafts that IPD sells? I'd love to go OEM but that's a mortgage payment there!

I think I'm going to try one of these http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/detai ... mDetailTab_

You can try just separating the inner CV and leaving it in there. Then when you get a new axle just use the old CV mated to the new one. Inner CVs hardly fail and personally I'd rather have half of an OEM in there than an aftermarket one.

Try also to give it a good shot of Liquid Wrench on the splines and let it sit for 1-2 days

But as precopster says, that's the easiest way, remove the boot clip and leave the inner CV casing in place. No need to go with all the trouble to remove the axle from the transmission. I have read a post about a main Volvo dealer who fought with this for a good 2h. If the clip inside has sharp edges or it's a bit larger than OEM - which has already happened, there might be little chance to pull it from there no matter how.

I read good things on forums about this seller but they are in the U.K http://www.jandrcvjoints.co.uk/

Still worth asking separately on forums because there have been more than a few axles from known sites that weren't properly refurbished

Be careful. Rust and C clip - take it to a shop.

Thanks Mike,

I would really like to do just that. I have one of those rare legit worn inner joints. I pulled the inner boot and removed the axle and tripod a few weeks ago. I could run my finger inside the housing and feel that it was noticeably dished out where the tripod rollers sit. There is also noticeable rotational play so, I'm going to have to just do it. I also suspect that the shafts aren't OEM. The RH had REMFG stamped on it.

I had been having some vibration when accelerating between 70-90MPH. Seemed to smooth out by 120 though. Found play in both inner CV joints. I changed the right side with no problems. Vibration is now about half of what it was before.
