Apparently it's a problem with Volvos where the engine mounts mess up the axles. I wonder if there's any truth to that...

Some repairs require engine be raised from below -- engine mount, engine pad, LCA etc.
VIDA warns raising of engine any greater than 24mm (25mm) could result in damages passenger side CV axle.
Now I wonder -- could it be what you showed us refers to that VIDA warning?

I take great care when raising engine from below for repairs on my two cars -- undoing engine and transmission mounts is first safe step.

Well, the passenger side axle is fixed to the engine at the carrier bearing, hence VIDA's recommendation when needing to raise the motor. So I imagine when the engine mounts start to wear out, that 25mm play can be achieved and at higher speeds, aside from causing shakes, will inevitably cause the passenger shaft to fail.
I've put the shafts back together and back on the car. I'm changing my top plates, links and tie rods... we'll see how it handles after wheel alignment.

@ou2mame: indeed but at what cost? I have 2 S40's (01 and 02) with around 180k kms on both... 2nd one I got for a few hundred bucks with a couple repairs I thought would be simple as I had the spares from my first s40... now I'm only keeping them road safe till it's scrap time...
At some point, just maintenance is more expensive than the car's worth.

I would really like to slap a T5 with a manual tranny in one of them but unfortunately, I barely have any time to do the smaller stuff
