1998 V70 base model correlation between small Evap leak and fuel tank leak

Hello, just trying to clear up some confusion I am having about my small evap leak OBD code my car is throwing (CEL is on), and fuel leak I am having when I fill the tank all the way.

I haven't been able to pinpoint the exact hose that is leaking, and it's confusing reading all these posts as many are for 850s some are for AWD cars and some for regular turbos. My car is a 98 base model - are the vent hoses on the top of the tank the same as the ones in cn90's tutorial or would I need different part #s ? I called the Volvo dealer with the part number from his post (the hose that goes on the blue tank vent) and the lady was like "yep it's $27 - can't tell you what year it's for as our system only describes it as "hose"...

My car only leaks fuel when it is filled to the max and then usually only if it is parked on an incline, but I want to fix it. Based on visual inspection of the tank, the leak of def coming from somewhere up in the fuel pump / fuel sending area, as evidenced by the dried fuel coming down the side of the tank from the top.

I am actually going to the dealer now to get a couple of fuel cap gaskets in hopes that that might be the source of the CEL, but I have to think that an unremidied fuel leak from the tank has got to be associated with that OBD code as well (p4402 small evap leak code)

Any suggestions? Also where is the best place to buy these vent hoses - ?

I'd guess that your leak is due to either the fuel pump gasket, or the gas filler tube gasket. You can check the fuel pump gasket by removing the cover in the cargo area and looking, and I believe you can see the gas filler tube from underneath the car.

Regarding the evap leak, what is the code you're getting?

I would check the fuel pump gasket or the wires leading into the pump as they are super easy to check/fix and common sources.

As for the hoses, yours should be the same as in cn90's but I you are right it is tough to be sure. On my 850 I dropped the tank and pulled the hose, made sure I had a match, but the car was out of commission for a while by that method.

Plus on what Jeff and erlkv11 said, for me the culprit would be that cross over hose p/n 9463088 as outlined by cn90.

FWIW ask the Volvo dealer to print out picture of your fuel tank and connecting parts based upon the emission number given to your car. The emission number is the eighth digit in your VIN number. I think there are 4 or 5 different ways these cars were set in 1998.

Thanks, I'm getting the P0442 evap leak small code. My gas cap and gas cap gasket were looking pretty weak, so I picked up an new OEM Volvo cap today. Haven't reset the system to see if that might have been the cause. With the gas leak I figured that's what's tripping it, but can't confirm that. Any thoughts?

If your tank leaks liquid it won't hold pressure. That will give you an evap code. Somewhere on MVS I've seen the actual rest protocol the 1998 does but basically the system pulls vacuum on the fuel tank and detects how fast it takes to come back to pressure. This time us used to detect normal, small, or large leak status
