v90 Timing belt service costs?

Just got a call from my mechanic about the v90 that I bought this passed weekend.

The first thing that he noticed, that I feel like an ass about, is that the tranny fluid dipstick was missing. Theres $32 from the dealer.

My main question is this: with 150K being 800 miles away, the mechanic recommends that we do the timing belt since its due.

What is the estimated cost for this service on average?

Just want to know how much this will set me back!

Don't know what you are facing on that model. On a 240 the belt is about $25 dollars and about 2 hrs. labor. Normally I change the belts while I'm at it. I figure 50,000 is enough for the exterior belts just as the timing belt. And, the exterior belts will leave you stranded almost as easily as the timing belt will.

Edmunds.com shows that the service is about two hours as well and in my area will be about 200 with parts!

Anyone actually pay a dealer to do this service? My mechanic is already charging me pretty damn good prices on parts, but I want to compare that to dealer prices.

look the belt up on autozone or advance. I like the goodyear 'gatorback' belts or the manufacturers. Then find out what the tensioner and (if it is not a 240, 740,940) and other rollers cost, replace if you see evidence of rust around the seal (the brg is failing) again autozone and advance. Ask your mechanic what his flat rate is. I always feel that doing this job myself makes me one with the machinery. You have to be a little careful and you may have to make a tool or two the first time but after that it's cake! Line everything up BEFORE you take the old belt off, get it right the first time.
