volvo lopes at idle speed

Post by thpave »

These days, while i was idling in the parking lot with my 1996 volvo 850 turbo, i found that it suddenly loped once in a while. I checked the haynes manual and found too many reasons that might be responsible for this. like PCV valve pressure, bad spark plug etc....kinda lost, dont know where to start with.
And to get to the spark plug part, what kind of screwer should I use? A guy at midas told me i should use torx bits, what is that?
Thanks a lot!

Being familiar with cars in general but Volvos for only a few months, I can point you in a couple directions... First, Volvo loves the Torx screw. Invest in a T15, T25 and T30 at a minimum (I chose to get the range from T10 to T40 because my nickname is Tim the tool man Taylor). If you get the right deal, pick up the socket versions as well because you'll find if you start working on the car in any great depth, you'll run into something where you need a really short Torx bit to fit on one thing and a longer one for something else (for instance, the steering wheel column cover needs something longer than a standard length screwdriver....)

Second, before you get yelled at by someone, when asking a question around here, include the year (which you did) and the mileage and any other details, like recent repairs, auto or manual transmission, etc.

Third, what kind of history do you have on the car? Do you have old receipts documenting its maintenance and repair over it's life? Has the pollution control system been serviced/replaced (oil trap? flame trap? all the hoses that connect the two?) Have you inspected vacuum lines? Have you really really inspected the vacuum lines (tedious but very necessary on your car)? Have the injectors, and the fuel and air filters been serviced? Checked your spark plugs individually for proper wear? Have you run resistance on your spark plug wires and checked their casings for any wear and tear? Cooling system flush(not that it would likely be an issue for your 'loping')? ... I'm just suggesting have a look at the stuff that's fairly simple to do first.

Fourth, I believe you have to purchase a code-reader for your car in order to check for on-board diagnostics. Either that, or have a garage read them for you, then get the codes and post them here, where someone can help you with diagnosis. I can't remember but somewhere around here I think I read of a way to build a code reader (don't quote me) for the 96 and 97 cars... Mine's a 93 which has its own code reader built in... yay me. You might try searching under "reading codes" or some other such wording.

Loping?... I would think maybe an intermittent electrical hickup or maybe a leak in some vacuum line... but there are other more educated individuals around here who would hazard a more accurate guess if you provide a little more detail on your car.

I found this thread which might help you to decide whether you want to get into reading codes or not...

...it appears I was wrong about being able to build a code reader for your car. Don't forget about ebay where you might possibly find the right tool for sale...

I just bought as code reader last week off eBay. Cost me $30. Including shipping.
Here is a search I just did for the Innova 3030
