If marks line up after 2 revolutions no pre-load is necessary.
The temperature setting is another issue. It needs to be right so when the engine gets hot and stretches the belt slightly the tensioner is not anywhere near the end stop.

Greetings. Been a few days. I want to ask a couple of questions to avoid a screw up. I have only rotated the engine two revolutions, and there is still a bit of slack in belt between crank , tensioner and intake cam. Belt between intake cam, exhaust cam and crank is tight with no slack.
1. Is this slack removed with more revolutions of engine or adjustment of tensioner.?
2. Tensioner temp indicator upon closer look , is not exactly centered as instructions show. Can tensioner be loosened a bit and adjusted with belt on ?
3. Does belt need to be removed to set correctly ?
My biggest concern is trying not to mess this up . I watched the video as Mike suggested, and see that they set the temp/ tensioner setting before turning engine, which I didn't do correctly myself. I'd rather take my time and get this right and not waste money in one turn of a key.
I drained the old gas using the " fuel pump relay jump" technique. Worked perfect. Drained old oil. I'll use my AutoZone rewards points and get some low cost oil for startup.
Thoughts , opinions and " been there done that", and "don't do that " respected.

Huh? The covers are matched to the head. Also, on your car, the lifters are adjusted with the screws in the cover. Did you change the cover?clifford06 wrote: Luckily I have spare cover.
Also, if you did NOT remove the VVT hubs, there is NO REASON for you to "preload" the VVT's.

Swapped covers due to bad torque wrench giving false readings. Possible warp of cover. Spoke to Volvo , cams matched to lifters. Clearance for lifters determined by cam lobe. Didn't remove VVT hubs.. Just had questions of slack in belt and tensioner adjustment.

Greetings. Okay , let me properly describe my issue. There is still slack in Tbelt that goes from the crank , idle pulley to intake cam. Tensioner indicator sits slightly off center of being in " the window" toward radiator side of engine. I didn't describe this correctly in my last post.
What I'm asking is if I rotate engine a few more times, will this slack be eliminated by tensioner adjusting to belt ? Or do I need to loosen the tensioner and adjust it manually ? Or take the belt off and replace it and start from scratch ?

Start the engine and watch the tensioner's movement. If it severely swings to either side while running adjust it by looseing the 12mm bolt 2 turns then turning the 5mm allen key in the desired direction accordingly and according to engine temperature. Make sure you snug up the 12mm bolt after doing this.

Greetings. Thanks Mike. Belt has enough slack to were it can be slide almost off idler pulley. When I slide side to side, about a 1/4 inch stays on idler. Is this normal ? If engine is started could belt possibly jump ? If it wasn't for the slack , I'd have no worry about starting and adjusting tensioner. Is this a situation were Ozark Lee's process of rotating 90 degress past marks and back . Then removing/ replacing belt is better ?
In no way am I questioning or competing anyone's experience or knowledge. Thanks

I'm sure it's fine if after 2 rotations the indicator settles near the centre.

Greetings. Well I didn't feel comfortable with so much slack in Tbelt. So I removed/ replaced it to try to tighten it up. I tighten up belt by turning crank slightly, and set tensioner. Rotated engine 1 complete time. Now crank and intake are on mark, but exhaust is 3 nothches off toward firewall. I know 2 rotations is the norm, but when I saw exhaust off so far I stopped. didn't want to cause damage. Is this now a problem ?
Do I need to reset the marks and start from scratch ? I was hoping to have this completed and attempt start up this weekend. I'm willing to work on this PITA up to Super Bowl kickoff. If I can't get it corrected by then , I'm sending it to my Indy shop.
Thoughts and opinions respected.
