1994 B230FD 940 Fuel pump and relay locations

Post by newcompu4556 »

I have a B230FD 940 Volvo that wont start. It will crank but not turn over. My first response is to check the relays. I have discovered that ther 6 prong relay as shown in my Haynes manual (far left second row behind the ashtray) is not the correct relay for this particular car (B203FD), instead it is the little blue/green relay on the front row second from the left. I have switched this with another 12V 5 prong relay that is on the same line of the panel. Nothing
(it could be noted that when i plugged in a different relay my seat motor turned on, so i know the harness works).

I have been told that there may be a possible second relay under the hood, but have been unable to find a picture of this.

Now the fuel pump....
I hae seen that some models of this car have an access port in the rear of the car for fuel pump, i have also been told that somemodels have a second fuel pump under the drivers seat. I see no access panel in the back of my car. Does this mean that i may only have the first fuel pump under the drivers seat? (i have been told that in soem 94 and the 95 versions that they only made them with the one fuel pump).

If this is the fuel pump under my seat is that the whining sound i hear when i put my car into igntion 2? it only comes on for about 3 seconds. If the fact that i am hearing this mean that the relay cannot be wrong?

Finally, if the only relay is the one i have found in the ashtray, and the only fuel pump is the one udner the drivers seat, and this pump is indeed the sound i am hearing and that means that all these items are functional---then where do i go from here?

Im a new Volvo owner, but believe i might be a life long user.

Thanks in advance
Mike

To Start - Turn ignition key to on position for about 3 seconds, then switch to start position.

No Start - Check fuel rail's pressure...

Having a similar problem with my 94' 940 Turbo.
I hear the pump kick on for 3 seconds when turning the key and then shuts off. It will start, but only after trying for about a minute. Drives good no problems there just trying to pinpoint what's causing my car not to start right away. Sometimes it's worse if I don't drive it for a while. After the car is started, I have to give it gas to keep it from shutting off. I'm new to Volvos and not the most mechanically inclined but love this car! me and my grandfather replaced the head gasket , changed spark plugs and plug lines ( universal but they seemed to hold up fine) I'm thinking it could be the fuel pump relay or fuel pump but this is only from doing research online . Please help me out , Thanks

Fuel Pressure Test...your local auto store may have an universal pressure tester...most likely Ford fittings.

Test - Engine cold...hook gauge up...turn key on....what's the pressure...wait ten minutes...what's the pressure...start engine...what's the pressure.

Look next to where the relay location PDF shows cooling fan relay. The relay was moved as a running change and 94 late build can have it in the 95 location.
