Hi there,
I'm new here, but already for a couple of years owner of a 1998 V70 XC with 2.5 T engine (aprox 380.000 km, last 200.00 run on lpg)
After realizing my first wish, replace nivomats by custom made springs en original shocks from a S70 awd, its time for the next wish.
I'd like to replace or repair the torque tube clutch.
Replacing is not so difficult, used parts difficult to find, new parts aprox € 1400,00 is not attractive.
Who has information or experience about repair of the TT??
With regards,
René Krook

Volvo actually calls it a Prop Shaft but it is the same thing. Repairing it is the way to go but it depends on the problem as to how you go about doing it. The U joints are easily replaced but typically the CV joints on the very end of the shaft are what goes bad and it is more often than not the front CV joint. The heat from the exhaust tends to cook the grease out of the joint. Those too are fairly easily replaced and not horribly expensive.
The part that is very difficult to replace is the carrier bearing. If that is bad you really need to send the shaft out to have the bearing professionally replaced. In the US many of us use a company called Colorado Drive Shaft. The last time I looked it was around US $600.00 to completely rebuild and balance a prop shaft. They may well be able to rebuild a shaft for you but I have no idea what kind of freight charges and VAT taxes, etc would be involved in shipping it back and forth from the Netherlands. I think Colorado Drive Shaft's main business is rebuilding drive shafts for big over the road freight trucks so a similar company that is local might be able to take care of your shaft.

If you are talking about the viscous coupling unit which is between the prop-shaft and bolted to the front of the rear differential, there is no repair for those clutch units are sealed. You can replace the clutch unit with a good used one. The main issue with those are if the car stands for a long time un-used the clutch plates dry out and when you use the car for the first time it rips the clutch plates apart. Volvo dealers have had issues with brand new units as they were not stored vertically!
The bearing at the front of that that supports the VC unit clutch does fail and can be replaced, as can the bush that supports the VC unit at the front under the floor.
Neil.
