Dear Volvo Friends,

re: 2000 Volvo S70… stereo locked, I have code, have called Volvo Matthews, and tried two levels of instruction w/o luck.

I would be grateful if someone can help!

I'm in SC, helping my parents with a medical situation. During the snowstorm, my battery died. I didn't have my manual with me, but thought I remembered the number. Tried three times, and am now locked out. After, I had a friend go in my house in NC & get the manual (where I had the code written on inside cover), it turned out I was off by one digit.

Code now says "OFF," and power button only changes 'off' to 'blank.'

Talked with Matthews Volvo, and they said do this:

1. An 8-10 hour 12 Volt trickle charge
2. Turn key to first position... should see 'off' then 'code.'

I tried that first with 2amp (thinking that was the only thing that was trickle charge.)

That didn’t work, so they said try go to 10 amps. (The charger has 3 settings – two say “charge” at 2 amps, or 10 amps, and “Start” at the 50 amp switch.)

1. So then, I did above with 10 amp switch, and same as above w/ no luck.

Maybe my car is older, and there is a different trick.

Again, I would be grateful for your help.

Welcome to MVS.

What the dealer has advised is good advice. The only thing I would do different is fully charge the battery first (disconnected from the car), then re-connect it and go through the 8-10hr in POS I again with 2A trickle charge. That is the correct process for your car (I also have a 2000 V70).

I'm assuming from your notes you have used this code before on your car, therefore it is the correct code for that radio? By that I mean the radio is the original one to the car?

That is the process so try what I have suggested as perhaps a low charge in the battery is not allowing the process to work.

Good luck!

Neil.

Your car needs to have the key on, with the radio showing "OFF," for four hours (is it 8 hours for the newer stereos? All of the 93-98 only need 4 hours). Then the display will change to "CODE" and you get three more tries at the code. The key can be in position 1 or position 2, it doesn't matter, as long as the radio display is on.

It sounds like maybe you charged the battery with the key off, then turned on the key, and that is why it didn't work.

The trickle charger recommendation is an optional step, to keep your battery from draining. If the battery is in good shape, don't worry about the charger. Just put the key in position 1 (so NO headlights are on!), come back in 4 hours, and then without turning anything off, enter the code.

If you think the battery will die during the 4 hours then hook it up to a trickle charger for the last hour or something. But be careful, I don;tknow what kind of charger you have but you can damage the battery with 10 amps if the charger does not have an auto shutoff function.

It was 2 hours last time I did it.

I left a charger on it set at 2 Amps while it was on, came back and punched the code in. Set.

Try again. The first time this happened to me, it somehow got botched during the 4 hours. Not sure if there was a power fluctiation from my charger, or what happened but it didn't work. Just kept saying OFF into the 6 hour range. Tried again (checked it at 4.5 hrs) and was able to successfully input the code.
