When I turn on the windshield wipers the first cycle is quite sluggish, then they go to normal speed.
Also, there's a little rotational play in the right side. The arm isn't loose on its drive pin, so something inside the trans box must be worn.
Anything to worry about? Difficulty of fix?

It's probably corrosion/build-up in the wiper assembly. Mine was like that when I bought the car, then stopped completely after a while. That behavior will eventually burn out the motor. I took my assembly out, cleaned and greased it as best I could w/o taking it apart, then put it back in. It's been well behaved ever since. There's also quite a few things than can come loose, but I was able to tighten things down again.
If you do take out the assembly (which isn't hard at all), just make sure you don't disturb how it's aligned. It's almost better to buy a new assembly than try and adjust it back if you get it out of whack... it's that much of a PITA.

Alligning is not a big deal if you mark things before disassembling.Been there-done that.
When wiper assembly is not much seized, lubricating it can prolong disassembling for a while. No matter how frequently you lubricate it it will eventually get seized badly.
My advice is to remove it from a car and disassemble it in pieces in order to get it properly greased.Sand corosion, clean everything, use a lot of grease, assemble it and you will forget about that as long as the car exist.
These motors are pretty strong. Before they fail, they will start to blow fuse. That would be the last warning before wiper motor fails.
There is a write-up called "fix for slow wipers" on the forum. All you have to know about it is in there.
