I just picked up my second 240, and ever since I purchased it the heater/vent fan has been making this terrible chopping sound- my mechanic quoted me almost 500 bucks for the job. I can pick up a "blower fan" (is this even the right fan?) on ebay for about 70- is it possible to install myself? has anyone done it? I've had some experience with wiring, but less with actual mechanical work. Any help would be appreciated

HEATER/AC BLOWER FAN HELP!

I have the same problem with my 81 240. If you still have the 3 speeds, then your fan motor is still working. All you need is the fan blade. The deaqler quoted me about $15. It is the labor that is expensive. You can do it yourself- the wiring is minimal. It is the dismanteling of the console that is the PITA. It is the bushing/bearing that has gone out.
thanks-
do you access the fan from the front of the dash (behind the glove box, stereo, etc.) or from from the knee panels underneath? will I be able to find it easily?
also- I don't know if you've run into this problem (or perhaps this is just how the car was made) but the hot/cold from the vent is not adjustable, its either really hot, or really cold. Also when I'm driving down the highway the air pressure (?) from outside pushes through the vent, even if the fan is off. any suggestions?
thanks alot for your help

The long way is to take it apart from the front, however, I was told you could take it apart from the driver side panel and just pull the motor out w/o taking all the rest apart.
The air does push through w/o fan just from car speed.
It sounds like your temp cable is not working correctly.

Replacing the heater motor on the 200 series Volvo is probably the most hated job on the car. There is no easy way to do it, it is not hard, just very awkward and time consuming. Look on Brickboard and buy a manual to follow.
Good luck and have fun

I agree with Volvord, it is a hated job. I had to do it twice in my 240 just two months ago, because the first fan I replaced had vibrations. With a good manual, good tools and good mechanical experience it will take you between 4 - 6 hours! Even the second time, (one week later) when I still remembered exactly what to do, what tools to use, how to do and what misstakes not to do, it took me two hours continous work.
Actually, you have to take everything out between the two foot wells, the whole complete unit. Loosen all wires, water hoses, all tubes for ventilation and electrical connections. It is not complicated, but it is taking several hours. It does not exist any "simple solution".
Good luck!

You also mentioned another problem, it is either hot or cold air coming out from the unit. In the water valve used for heat adjustment it is also a thermostat checking the air temperature. When this thermostate function is broken, the temperature will either be cold or hot. You have to replace this valve, and it is definitely good to do it at the same time as changing the fan because you have to do a update of the installation. If you buy this valve as an origin sparepart, you will get the same type of valve as in the 740-series with some specially bended new rubber hoses and instructions what changes to do in the installation. If you do this update separately, it will take you a couple of hours, but if you do it at the same time as changing the fan, it will take almost no time. The valve kit is expencive, in Sweden the price for the origin replacement kit is more then 100 USD.
