Thanks for the write-up guys- the 2000 V40 I have is just over 100K miles and in need of this- I suppose it too will take the Castrol 3309 equivalent fluid.

Edit: I was wrong about the type of fluid- through 2000, the auto transmission is a 4 speed and takes the older Dextron, from 2001, the transmission is a 5 speed and does indeed take the JWS-3309 equivalent.

Thanks for this. When I bought my 2000 V40 T4 it had 111,567 miles on the clock. I bought it from a friend who had spent about 18 months rebuilding it and all aspects of the car had been renewed or repaired. The only job he had not done was to change the AT Fluid. I was advised by an independent mechanic who specializes in Volvo and Saab that at that mileage the ATF should be changed. He did it for me for GB£60 (US$83) and that included the fluid and labour. The fluid that came out was dark brown and smelled bad. I immediately noticed a marked improvement in performance - so the debate as the whether or not to is nailed for me - check it regularly and change it after 75,000 miles.

Bump for a great info in this thread.

I'm looking at options for a JWS-330 equivalent for a 2003 V40. Mobil 3309 and Toyota Type Type T-IV seems to be reasonably price and regularly available. Anyone have experience with either or another recommendation.

Maybe this photo will help. Sorry it's kind of fuzzy.

The drain plug is on the right side of the transmission.

I just did a drain/flush of my transmission fluid for my 2001 S40. The directions were great. I couldn't get the fluid to drip out slowly of the hole. Luckily, I used the plastic paint funnel recommended here and the fluid all drained into the bucket. Thank you!

Glad to know that little writeup I did 6 years ago helped someone out! haha.

My dad got me an oil extractor as a gift a few years ago and that is what I use now to change the transmission fluid on the Volvo. I feed the oil extractor into the transmission dipstick and pump out about 3 quarts of fluid this way. Draining it got me about 3.5 quarts, but the oil extractor is way easier.

The oil extractor I have looks something like this so I hope this can help someone else.
