1997 850 R Shutter and stall

Post by britdirk »

1997 Volvo 850 R approx. 82,000 miles.

I have had this problem with my volvo now for the past few months. First, I will give you all a little history. I purchased the volvo from my aunt and uncle in-law about a year ago. They purchased it new and drove it about 6,000 miles a year until selling it to my wife and me. They did regular maintenence and took good care of it. They stopped driving it about a year before we purchased it and not once turned it over in that time. It just sat in their driveway.

Since purchasing it, we have put several thousand dollars into it. We have replaced the radiator, coolant reservoir, heater hose, alternator, plugs, wires and distributor cap. I do not have any previous experience with car repair and know very little about cars, so I have taken it to whichever mechanic i can find that fits my budget. I have recently purchased the repair manual and found it not too difficult to replace my radiator on my own. YEA! My car recently would not pass smog due to the fact that my check engine light wasn't sending a signal. I'm not quite sure what thats all about.

Anyway, back to my problem. About the time i noticed a leak in my radiator, I also noticed that after the engine warmed up to normal operating temperature, and after idling at a stop light it would begin to shutter and die. This would occur mainly upon accelerating. Once the car died it would not start again, and during ignition it would shutter so much that the whole car would rock side to side. After the car cooled completely it would then reluctantly restart. Recently i have noticed that after the car warmed i would lose power when accelerating. While on a flat road, it would take a second or two to "kick into gear" and accelerate as normal. While on an incline, it would not accelerate at all and would jerk forward.

These symptoms only occur when the engine has run for longer than 30 minutes or if the car has stoped and started several times. I have not recently had a diagnosis but previously I did and it said i had multiple misfires.

My question is this...Has anyone had this problem before, and if so...what is the major cause and how easy is it to fix on my own? I am on a limited budget so any money saving tips would be greatly apreciated.

Thank you in advance for your replys.

So do you think it just needs cleaning or replacing? If it needs cleaning, how would i do that? Thank you for your replies.

You replace them, (well you should) but make sure that it's the problem

Get a code reader (Most any autoparts store will loan you one) and read the codes from the OBD-II port under your coin holder. Let us know the codes you get.

Here are the codes i found today.
1. P0172 2. P1310 (this one came up twice.) 3. P0305 (this one also came up twice) 4. P0304 5. P0300 6. P0301 7. P0302 8. P0303 9. P0336

Once before I had read the codes and knew about the misfires and had the plugs, wires and distributor cap replaced so I think the misfires are taken care of. But the others, P0172, P1310, and P0336 I dont know anything about. Will you please tell me what they are and how to fix them? Is this the answer to my problem?
