Immobilizer/wheel locked

Post by Huitneuf »

Hi, I was wondering if anyone might have any suggestions on how to fix my Volvo. I bought a 2007 S40 with a blown driver's airbag and ruined clockspring due to the wires melting the SRS plugs. I replaced those with no problems.

However, the SRS light remained on, and VIDA gave me this error "SRS-0031 Adaptive steering column Resistance too high." It turns out there's another SRS plug in the steering column that the wreck had ruined. So one trip to the junkyard later, I put in a new steering column, one that came from the same car that provided the airbag and clockspring.

Now instead of the one SRS light going out I have lots of new problems. It turns out the replacement steering column is locked, so I can't reattach it at the base of the floorboard. Here's where I messed up, I believe. I started the car to see if I could unlock the steering wheel. I didn't have the clockspring installed at the time. The wheel remained locked, and now the car has all sorts of error codes. The Immobilizer is on, and I have a "wheel locked, check manual" message.

So I get another steering column that isn't locked up. This one is from a 2006 S40. I plug everything in, and turn the car on. Now the car locks the second new steering column. The new error messages that appeared when I installed the first new steering column remained.

VIDA is saying specifically I have these problems:

CEM-DD10 Communication with SCL control module Signal missing
ECM-720A Immobilizer communication - Communication fault
SRS-0005 Battery supply Low voltage
SRS-012C Can Signal Configuration fault
SWM-DD10 Communication between control units Communication fault
SWM-DD11 Communication between control units Communication fault

Is there anyway I can erase the immobilizer codes with VIDA?

Just to check, I put the original steering column that had the bad SRS plug back in. All of the new error messages remained.

It seems like the ECM and SWM just need to be reset so they can work together. Is there a software fix?

I appreciate any advice anyone might have -- besides pushing the car into a river, which I've already considered. ;-)

Thank you.

The lock unit on the "new" steering columns is not matched/programmed to the car. It is part of the security features and is not plug n play. You can use the new steering column to address the SRS adaptive strg column code but you will need to drill the sheared head bolts and use EZ Out to remove the bolts to get the locks off the two columns. The idea is to make it a pain in the ass to steal. That it is a PIA to work on is just a bonus........

Then the codes will have to be cleared. SRS is not a system that turns off warning light and clears the code when the issue is resolved. You must use a capable scan tool to get it to go out.

If SRS codes are yellow and cannot be cleared using VIDA erase that means module is locked. It cannot be unlocked with VIDA.
If you have questions about Volvo firmware ask me. I may know an answer :)

Interesting. Thanks, guys. I'll put the original lock module onto one of the new columns and let you know.

Thanks again.

Changing the lock module to a new steering column worked. As you predicted, it was a pain in the ass, but eventually I got it done. Thanks again.

(Now I have a new set of fault codes, but they're aren't related to immbolizer issues I started this thread for, so perhaps I'll start another thread if I can't sort it out tomorrow.)

So it's months later, and I still don't have this thing fixed.

Actually, thanks to the help from the posters above I did get the original steering wheel lock switched to the new column, and it did work just fine with no problems, no warnings, and no immobilizing. Then it just stopped. I got the same messages as before.

So I ordered a used steering wheel lock from ebay, figuring I'd bite the bullet and take it to the dealership to have it paired to my car.

Now it's at the dealership, and they're saying the used steering wheel lock won't work, and that I need to buy a new one from them. Does anyone know if this is nonsense or not? It seems as if it's just a software-update issue then they should be able to pair the replacement lock I got to my car. I'd like to have some outside opinions before I decide my next step.

Thanks in advance.

Used one is useless. It is programmed once when it is new.

Thanks. I appreciate the response. At the very least I'll get my money back from the used one I bought on ebay. It makes no sense for people to sell these things if they can't be reprogrammed.
