Check Engine Light

Yesterday my check engine light came on after about 50 miles of driving. Today I took my 1999 V70 T5 into Schucks and hooked up the DTC Scanner and it read P0014 Exhaust Camshaft Position Timing Over Advanced (Bank 1).

Slightly before the check engine light came on I noticed the idle was a bit off, but not significantly. The idle became worse over time, but never rough. No noticeable power loss or other symptoms occurred either.

When I got home yesterday I hopped on Matt's and came across the idea that my gas cap may have been loose. Upon checking I found that it was loose from getting gas earlier that day. I tightened it down and let the car run for a little while with no noticeable changes or the check engine light turning off.

Today after scanning the OBD-II I reset the codes and the light hasn't come back on after 20 miles. Hopefully the gas cap was the problem and caused the Exhaust Camshaft Position Timing code.

Does anyone have any ideas or concerns that I should know about?? Thanks!

Not withn the last 5,000 miles. I purchased the car at 80,000 miles a few months back and it's been running perfectly.

Make sure the timing belt has been done at that 70,000 mile mark. That'll be a costly repair if it fails on you. As for the diagnosis of the gas cap, it is quite possible that is all it was, as I have had that happen to my truck... "check engine" light went on, was told to check the gas cap, and indeed it was loose. Tightened it and that was the end of that... 9 months later, no concerns.

The timing belt change interval on your 99 S70 is 105K miles. It was extended from 70K to 105K with the change to the mechanical timing belt tensioner mid way through the 98 production run.

thanks pfeener for the info on the timing belt interval. I'm confidently hopeful that this was caused by the gas cap, today the car is running better than before I reset the OBD-II and tightened the gas cap.
This is my first Volvo and I'm very happy with it thus far. It was a tricky one to find because I was looking for a T5 with a manual transmission and lucked out to find a black on black 99 T5 5spd with low miles.

Sounds like a great car. Good luck with it. One of the major issues with the 99's was the change to an electronic throttle control. Basically 100% of these have failed or will fail over the car's lifetime. The good news is Volvo extended the warranty to 10 years or 200K miles on this mechanism and once fixed it is highly unlikely it will ever fail again.

When it does fail the car dies however and has to be towed. You might check with the dealer to see if your car's ETM (electronic throttle module) has ever been replaced. You can also read a lot about it in the ETM post at the top of this forum.

My check engine light came on again today after 100 miles since clearing the code. This time it came on it was after stalling the car twice from slipping the clutch too fast. The code was the same as last time. I know for a fact that my ETM is the uncleaned original, but I don't see that being a factor in this. Do you think I should take it into a shop?? I'd really like avoid spending money on this and do whatever work is necessary myself, but am unexperienced with timing adjustments on cars without distributor caps.

there are other possible causes, but the cam/crank timing might be off. you need to take it to someone that knows volvos and they can check it. i had this problem too and now that it's fixed, the car is FAST! it cost me $300 to have it fixed.
