Hi!
1) I´m wondering: will the Sport mode on the AT actually also change the ECU settings for the motor (in terms of Timing, injected fuel, ... resulting im more torque and hp) or will it just Keep the AT in higher rpm settings?
2) my AT at nearly 2000.000 mls shifts a bit harder from second to third than the otehr gears. I guess something is wearing out. But what?
I´ll try to flush the AT again, and I´m not worried it will die anytime soon, I´m just curious why.
3) which ATs can I put into my R. I guess NA motors use a shorter gear ratio. Will early V70 ATs fit as well? I´m thinking about getting anotehr beater for grocery hauling and would like to aquire one that could serve as a donor down the road (a similar year Turbo would probably be my best guess, I know, but they are getting hard to find for beater prices)
Thanks,
Clemens

Wow, you're going to give Irv Gordon a run for the record.Clemens wrote:my AT at nearly 2000.000 mls ...
1. Sport mode just shifts at higher RPMs and less pedal input is required to initiate a downshift.
2. It could be lots of things. If fluid condition is good I would look at all of the mounts. Your only other option is to dig into the transmission itself.
3. You can use NA or turbo transmission but your car will work harder on the highway with the NA box. Any P80 up to 98 will be compatible.

Thank you. and crap, one Little 0 makes that much difference. no, its´s 200.000 of course.
maybe the tranny mounts are worth checking. I just did the upper torque mount, so chances are the other might be shot as well. hope all that maintenance paiys off and I can continue to enjoy it. but why not, it´s an old Volvo.
I guess tranny overhauling is just too much effort. I´ll probably rather get one out of a running car when that day Comes...

Does the hard 2 to 3 shift only happen in sport mode?

I mostly drive it in the slow mode. the hard shifting is less apparent in sport mode, I believe. I just usually drive it in slow mode cuz I hate the sudden downshifts when I don´t expect them.

#2 Probably the lower torque mount worn.
#3. ANOTHER beater? What does that mean?

oh, Robert the Prophet has spoken to me. Makes my day ...
1: Alright, will do
2: thanks, will give that a try the nex time it´s up on a lift.
3: We have two 850s. One is a 10V 4dr that´s beat up which my wife mainly uses for hauling the kids to kindergarten and grocery getting. It´s past a point where fixing it up nicely is worth it. And then I have my black beauty, the 5dr R. I got it as a Family wagon, but it´s too nice to have my wife and kids leave food and dirt everywhere. I´d also hate it if she scratched my Volants or broke the front bumper. She agrees

1. well covered already
2. lots of suggestions, my thinking: first suspect is the ATF fluid, then check all of the mounts, lower torque - front engine - hydraulics.
3. I would stick with another P80 turbo as a transmission donor for a P80 R.

btw, can the tranny on a 96 be read with a homemade blinkie box. I don´t have one under the hood, just the OBD2 port under the coin tray.
I know that my cheap OBD scanner won´t read the 96 Software. Maybe the Volvo stealership can.
