P80 ECT sensor brand(s)

Post by scot850 »

I tried doing a search on MVS for recommended brands other than Volvo OE, but the search engine ignores ETC and ECT as search values!

I know that our cars are temperamental when it comes to ECT used so what other brands are good to use? Who is OE manufacturer and would you use that part?

Thanks,

Neil.

Thanks as always for your great input Misha. I recognise the brand names now you put them into print.

What is the brand IAT (?) which I have seen on the Volvo Site web-site they sell? Again this sounds familiar.

Hey Neil,
I installed the KAE version that FCP sells. We've only put a few hundred miles on it so I can't really speak to it's longevity. (But after $2/mile year, figured I should save a little money...) It seems fine. Engine temp is fine, radiator fan turns on and it hasn't made our P0455 or P0133 any worse (or better!).

IAT = Intake Temperature Sensor. :!:
It seems that this term (IAT) has been misinterpreted for ECT in this forum's fread. :!:

Just for clarification, the IAT is the Intake Air Temperature Sensor and the ECT is the Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor. P0118 is indeed an ECT error code.

I tried an FAE brand engine coolant temp sensor and it only lasted a couple of years before failing. The resistance readings were higher than specified and there was a visible crack in the case between the epoxy and the metal exterior housing. I had to replace it with an SWF brand. The SWF brand is working fine so far (~2 years).
I posted some pictures and resistance measurements here:

Yes, don't cheap out on the ECT sensor- I went through several on my S70 before getting what was labeled as a Volvo unit and then things settled down and worked flawlessly. What was a pain was some of the units (like from Autozone) seemed to work fine for a week or so and then the temp needle in my car started going haywire, making me think I was overheating (which I was not)...and the ECU started re-mapping the air/fuel ratio etc. I became quite the expert at switching these out...this happened on my car as well as a V40 we had at the time. So, back to square 1- only get the one that others have tried and have said they work...OEM (or equivalent) all the way- don't buy an off brand thinking you're going to save a few $$'s...it's not worth the headache! And, let me add that if you're changing it out anyway, and you don't know the history of your thermostat, change it at the same time too!

Thanks for the education as always guys. Reason for asking about the IAT label is if you look on this website, They use the acronym IAT after the coolant temp sensors in that section. Volvo also use that IAT acronym on Vida.

http://www.swedishautoparts.com/V70/Vol ... ml#linkbar

Don't know if this company supplies OE parts or not, but the original reason for asking was someone locally is selling a new temp sensor they claim is a Volvo OE part and were selling it for $25 CDN, but once I got the part number it is for the -98 cars, part # 9186486, my car needs the 99-01 version # 9125463. As I have a 2000 it is now a moot point. I don't really need the part as I replaced the ECT a couple of years ago with a Volvo part and car has only done about 6000km since. I believe I may still have the part I replaced too. I replaced it as the gauge sat/sits slightly below the horizontal which none of my previous P80's have. Replacing made no difference.

As I always keep an eye out for cheap new OE parts, I buy and stash for the future if they are relevant to my car. So many parts are going obsolete, that having a spare is handy. Those of you who know how much of a pain it was for my cars rear sub-frame replacement last year, most of the 9 months down time was due to hunting for new and then good used parts for the re-build.

Thanks again guys.

Neil.
