V70 Emission related questions--OBDII Please Help

Post by BBslider001 »

Hey all. I know this has been discussed to death, but I guess I am looking for the most recent input. I am having a heck of a time getting my OBDII to reset since the PO changed the battery right before I bought it. I have tried the drive cycle (2 different ones) all to no avail. I also get the P0442 Evap Emissions code once in awhile. I have read it usually the "J" hose? I have been unable to locate the part. Any suggestions?

In short, I have only had this car 2 months and was excited about getting it because it is in fantastic shape and drives great, but this headache has me ready to sell it at half of what I paid for it. I am so sick of dealing with it. I am pretty mechanical and do all of my won work, but the only other option I see is taking ti to the dealer to have them drive cycle it. Please help!

As to the drive cycle issue disconnect the battery again and try driving it for a few days. I'm not as familiar with the s/v/xc70's but I think there is some kind of provision for passing these cars despite the OBDII not being ready.

Thanks for the input. I'll look into it and see. For now it's been put up for sale in the classifieds.

The OP car is a 98 V70XC (from his ad). That could mean it is either under the LH front fender and has the hose up top of the canister (really needs inner plastic fender liner removed to get to), or if it is a late 98 may be under the rear end on RHS above rear axle.

Jesus Christ, dude. You say it's in fantastic shape and drives great, but you already put it up for sale? Just sell it and be done with it - you can't have been that "excited about getting it" in the first place, if this is all it took to slash the price in half and sell it.

That's a good point.
What I mean is, that throwing away half the price of the car, which in your own words is in good condition and drives great, seems more than a little hasty to me. Like someone else said above, there are provisions for passing these cars w/o all parts being ready, and there are several steps that you can take to further see if you can get ready - checking your J-hose is one, and also going over the rest of the evap system. There are hardlines in there that are also prone to cracking - it's not much more than a couple of hours work to change out most of them.

Like polskamafia said, try disconnecting your batter again, and make sure you push your brake pedal to clear any lingering causes of settings being retained, then run through the drive cycle again.

My reasoning for being a bit impatient is that some people throw their cars away for the smallest of reasons, and this is kind of one of those times (though you were selling it at least, not scrapping it, so point in your favor). With a little bit of patience and a few hours of effort, your car is going to serve you well into the 300k mile range - that's something worth considering, in my opinion.
