upgrade from 854 to 2003 v70?

Post by Clemens »

Hey!
Since my wife complains about the not working AC in her 95 854 which also loses oil, has a limping transmisson, peeling clearcoat and is no wagon I am considering another Volvo wagon. Since i haven' t been able to find a decent 855 with working AC I am considering a 2003 v70 with nice interior end no known issues according to the seller. It has the 2.4 170 hp NA.
I'm just concerned that it might be troublesome bedause of the canbus. I had an awful experience with screwed up electronics in my 2001 Audi A6.

Any thoughts are appreciated.

You do need a VIDA to troubleshoot P2s but that isn't crazy money Clemens

I love my 2005 and the boss will too.

If you can manage to keep an old A6 on the road without going mad, you will do well with a P2.

Nope, the A6 is gone cuz I couldn´t figure out where all the blinking lights came from. I sold it off dirt cheap and got an 96 855 R instead. So now I´m kinda scared to face electronical issues all over again...

Strangely my wife would rather go with a nice 855 than a V70 (because of the huge bumpers) ...

A the feely-touchy bumper parking process.

I wasn't a big fan of our XC70 (06) initially, but it has grown on me. I'd like it more if it didn't have the 4-C suspension with $1000/corner shocks. I am considering a P2 T5 wagon somewhere down the line.

The suggestion to buy a Vida/Dice to add to a laptop (about $120 US) is a good way to go. You even need it for 99-00 P80's. The chances of finding a good 850 with working A/C is going to be hard. So unless you are lucky finding one that has had the evaporator replaced in the recent past, you will need to plan to fit one. It is a big job, but there is a how-to that I used here and it was great with pictures. You would need to plan for a couple of days to do this as it is a good 10 hour job if it all goes to plan. Down side is you are working with 20 year old plastics!

Neil.

Guys, thanks for the words of advice.
I just found a 95 Turbo wagon with recently done evap and supposedly in excellent shape (but ugly turquoise and it´s in Germany). More to consider. I hate decisions like that ... GRRR
