They are blanks for switches like fog lights, trip computer and other market accesories that not all of these have.
Antenna is a 35 dollar part, 5 minute install.
If you can't "move the mirror" it's bad, buy either a new one or a used one.
For some reason some just freeze up, try HARD to move it, it may break though. I just had to replace mine in a 2000 with low miles, luck of the mirror draw.
You will find that strange parts fail in these cars so don't be surprised when something as simple as a mirror fails to function

Thanks for your reply, JRL.

Now, regarding the rear-view mirror, it *does* move up and down to adjust, apparently, for nighttime driving so as to enable the driver to lessen the intensity of the headlights of cars following behind.

However, what I haven't been able to figure out is how to make the more common basic adjustments a driver would make for normal daytime driving to get the mirror "just right" so as to get a good, full view out the rear windshield.

Is it the stalk or bar that the mirror is connected to, and which itself goes into the roof, that's supposed to move? I don't think I've ever seen that kind of set-up in any other vehicle but that's the only possibility I can think of for this seemingly simple problem!

One other thing: I looked ... and looked ... and looked this afternoon for the low-pressure port to recharge the A/C on my 1998 S70 but couldn't find it! (Just did the same a couple of days ago on a 2003 Chrysler Grand Caravan minivan and the port was situated very obviously, in contrast, so I was a bit surprised that its not so easily-found on my great new Volvo.) Would appreciate if someone could clue me in to where the low-pressure port is on this vehicle!

Incidentally, anyone have any favorites as to brands of R134a refrigerant? before this week I never recharged a car's A/C before and was amazed 9and pleased) to see regrigerant being sold openly (I'm still condiioned by years of "freon"-using automotive A/C systems that could only be recharged by licensed professional technicians.)

As always, thanks a million to those who take the time to reply!

The mirror pivots on a ball joint where the mirror itself meets the support. The bar does not move, the mirror does. If it has frozen at that ball joint, you can either try to break it free, or you can replace the mirror.

I'll try to get a photo of mine later tonight to point it out to you if someone doesn't get a picture posted before then.

R-12 was freely available to anyone for a very long time, My father still has a few "self-recharge" cans sitting in his garage that he'd bought back in the 80's. It wasn't until the enviro-nazis got busy and stuck us with the much-inferior R-134a. (Doesn't cool as well, doesn't lubricate as well, is flammable...)

As far as brands, they're all the same. R-134a has a defined chemical composition and if you're buying pure 134a the the brand doesn't matter. Some brands have slightly different lubricant compositions, but not enough to matter or to cause compatibility issues with other lubricants, you can safely use whatever is cheapest.

R-134a is being replaced by different "Freon" in all new vehicles. New stuff is totally incompatible with R-134a components. I would by cans now before the price goes up and availability goes down.

134a is still basically in the majority of cars across the country. I wouldn't worry too much about it not being available for the foreseeable future. Hopefully they won't ever force upgrades though, as that would be impractical for most of these cars.

Also, nice 14 year old thread resurrection.
