Rebuilt engine/transmission?

Post by Boss_Hoggins »

Hello everyone!

So, my beloved 2000 V70 needs a new cylinder head. At 205K miles, I think I would be better off replacing the engine and transmission.

First, is there a preferred source for rebuilt engines/transmissions everyone around here likes best?

Second, would this require the dealer to reprogram the computer?

Thanks for any advice/recommendations

Is this a turbo or a N/A engine?

The low pressure turbo engine for the 1999 / 2000 is a tough one to find. If this is a N/A on the 2000 I think you have a 5 speed automatic and that is a problematic transmission.

In general, if the engine is otherwise in good shape it is typically best to repair or replace the head and leave everything in place. The exact model of your car can be a game changer though.

It is N/A, I should have mentioned that. Sorry. It's the 2.4L 5 cylinder, 5 speed auto. 2000 V70SE

I've heard that the transmissions have issues, that's why I thought I should go ahead and replace it. I'm the second owner of this vehicle and the original owners kept it dealer maintained. There is no record of it ever being replaced, and I'm over 200K now. I've put over 70K on it myself. It hasn't failed on me yet, but I think I'm starting to notice some impending doom.

If I'm going to be replacing a transmission soon, I think now would be the best time for it. So.. new cylinder head and transmission.. might as well get it all together as an overhauled engine/transmission?

I intend on keeping this car for.. I dunno. Ever. =)

Thanks for your input

If the transmission is beginning to act up then finding a lower mileage powertrain might be the best course and just swap out the engine and the transaxle as one piece. I would pull them apart and deal with the Rear Main Seal, timing belt, PCV and do some of the other stage 0 stuff while the donor is out of the car. If you can find a wreck you might be able to get the whole powertrain for about the same price as reworking the head.
