1996 850R Balancing New Tires

Post by wackenhut »

Hi,

I just bought 4 new tires and had them balanced. They put the weights inside the rim (weight strips). When I went to another location to have them rebalanced, they put the weights on the outside of the rim. It definitely does not look as good, but wondering if the shop just did not have the weight strips or if one way is better then another. Personally I would prefer that they do not show. Please let me know.

Thank you.

Takes a little more time and effort to put them inside. Outside is easier for tire guy

If they balance, they're balanced.
Get it done as you prefer.
I agree - Outta sight, please.

I hate to see the weights on the outside or even on the inner edge for that matter. Those knock on weights where I live damage the tire finish and cause the alloys to blister where they attach. Also we have a family member, who has a habit of parking by feel at a kerb, and if it catches a balance weight on the outside of the rim it runs the weight around the edge causing a lot of paint damage to the rim.

The downside to the balance weights being stuck on is they can come adrift. Also had issues where there is not a lot of room between the rim and the brake caliper causing the weights to be pulled off and seriously damaging the inside of the rim.

If there is plenty of room between the caliper and the rim, I prefer to go with the sticky weights.

Do most places do sticky weights? I purchased my current tire set from Discount Tire (brother who used to work there gave me a sweet discount), and they do free rotating/balancing on tires purchased from them. Is it just something that can be specified?

I agree, the outer weights look horrendous.

Not all places offer it as I think they are more expensive so you have to ask. They also have to make sure they clean the area where the weights are to fit very well to make sure they don't come back off. If you want sticky weights, then ask first and if they don't offer it, go somewhere that does!

Good luck!

I hate steel wheel weights on alloy wheels.
They look awfull and damages clear coat on alloy wheel.
I always insist on proper alloy wheel weights...sticky weights.
