Jeeesh.,...that's a pesky one. Mine is pesky too but comes 2000-2500 miles apart.

Well....I've done a smoke test and nothing showed up. Eventually I'll do another one.

I've done a visual inspection and found a rough spot but no places that look like they actually have a hole. Patching that tubing is harder than it looks. Reinforced fuel line is extremely difficult to push onto the plastic even if you stretch the fuel line first with a pair of needle nose pliers. Unreinforced fuel line for a lawn mower is much easier to work with but its still tough to push it on more than about 1/4 to 3/8 of an inch which is probably enough. Lubrication helps a little. I'm beginning to wonder again if its some sort of electrical problem. Also, next weekend I'm going to double check the orientation of the purge valve. I've checked it before and it should be OK but I've had it off so many times its worth checking again.

Many months before the smog test though.

Expand it with a circular mandrel. A hard plastic inflators nozzle works perfectly. The right size socket will also work if you have a small set.

I should have thought of this before but if you just plug the engine vacuum port for the purge and still get P0171 you know you are chasing the wrong thing. Eliminate the entire purge system as a possibility in one test.

You will get a P04xx after the evap drive cycle but that will clear after you plug it back in.

I have never gotten a P0171 code. So I don't understand your comment that if I plug the vacuum port and still get p0171 I know I have a different problem. I get p0455 and p0455 only. The first day or two several months ago when it started I got the code for a small leak a few times and then it switched over P0455 every time.

Did you finally resolve the p0455?

Funny, its been awhile but I was just thinking about that this morning ... home sick with a cold today. The answer is I don't know. It went away about a month ago and I attribute it to one of two things. A) the weather in atlanta is now consistently about 55 F overnight. I've noticed the P0455 indications come when the overnight temp dips into the low 40's for my car. B) at the same time the temperature warmed up I replaced the gasket on the gas cap. I went to carquest and bought a new gas cap and used the gasket from that on the original volvo gas cap. At one point I had installed an OEM volvo gas cap from another model/year car. The dealer recommended it and it fit. It was significantly different than the other cap and I always suspected that it might have something to do with my P0455, so I put the original back but put on a new gasket. The gasket on the other cap was really soft and flimsy. The gasket on the carquest part is just like the original. If the code comes back with cold weather I'll know. The good part for me is my emissions test is in July, so I'll pass (at least this year) whether I've fixed it or not.
