740 crankshaft belt pully issue...

Post by mburse »

I need to know what holds on a crankshaft pully that drives all belts on the front of the engine.

I have noticed that this pully has pulled away from the front of the engine and is rubbing against the fan and causing my altenator belt to fall off.

I really dont want to tear it apart and find that it is more than I can handle...

It should be a big bolt and a washer in the center of the shaft holding the pully.

help again

I'm a hack... could use some professional help here :)

I have removed all the belts and the fan... it appears that the crank shaft pully is nfg.... seems to have seperated into two parts... one in my hand and the other on the crank still.

My question is this. And again keep in mind that I am in no means a mechanic. .... I need to remove the bold and flange from the front of the crank.... is there an easy way for me to prevent the crank from turning... The only thing I could think of was removing the starter to get to the fly wheel and somehow block it from turning...

Any info you could impart to me would be greatly apreciated.

again the car is an 89 740 GLE 16valve with auto trans

You are right, especially if it is an automatic, you have to remove the starter to block the flywheel. The bolt in the crankshaft center can be very hard to remove. I had to use an extension of 1 meter, and it was still heavy.
I noticed that the pully seems to be made of one inner ring and one outer ring connected by rubber. Probably that rubber is bad in your pully.

Thank you so much for your responce. This has been a great site for a volvo noob like myself.

Ok... i think i found the starter... bought half way down the block on the driver side under the intake manifold? does that sound right? anyone know how its connected... didnt see any bolts but then again i didnt look hard.

also what did you use to block the fly wheel?

Thank again in advance
