Intermintantly hot AC

Post by john850 »

I have a 1996 850. For about a year, the airconditioning has been acting up. First it blows as cold as it ever has...then, after 30-45 minutes, it abruptly turns warm. If I turn the AV off, and back on in several minutes it will cool again. I have checked the coolant, which seems normal. Ideas about how to diagnose and remedy this will be greatly appreciated.

Do a search on my posts about AC. I had this happen a few years back. It was a hose that was collapsing.

Just a thought, but if the system has some clogged lines or is generally filthy, it can get too cold and without all the internal relief valves working properly, it freezes and will shut off. After you have turned it off, the ice melts, opens the lines again and cold air blows.
That's just ONE possible senario

Thanks Tsquared,

I did find the old post...is it possible to tell me which hose it was? I noticed some other owners where having the same trouble and had the same question.

Thanks again,
John

If memory serves me, it was the bottom hose. The AC system is one of the few items I let my INDY work on. Every time I try to save a little $$ on an AC repair I spend more than what I could hire it out for...

Similar behavior with my 1996 850 2 summers ago. It was just low on refrigerant. My mechanic checked and added R134a to recharge it. It is still doing fine going into the third summer since then.
