95 850T Intermittent start issue

Post by iruleyounow »

My car has been acting very strange when I go to start it. I'll turn the key and just hear the relay click. I have to turn the key about 2-4 times usually and it fires right up. I replaced the battery about 2 weeks ago and it worked great for that one day, then went right back to doing it. I thought it was because I put an aftermarket radio in, so I swapped it back out and put the old in but it did the same thing.

My YouTube video:

I have good voltage at the battery. Maybe the starter is going out?? Or something to do with the radio?? Security??

Thanks for the help

Because you just replaced the battery: could it be something simple like a battery clamp thats loose or a worn ground connection?

Also, i guess we have starter relais that could get stuck on our p80s.

Ive taken apart the clamp and cleaned everything as well. Right before I made the post I actually made sure the wires were tight at the starter and battery. All was good. So it could be a relay? When the starter kicks in it cranks right up.

Looks like a bad ground to me..
Either that or corrosion on the signal wire to starter.

Check and clean ground point beside battery and on the block. I would also fiddle around with the wires on the starter, clean with sandpaper

That was my next plan

Ignition switch also goes on these cars

I think you have a starter bypass wire in your engine compartment, too, that might help diagnose this

So just a quick update....

It was indeed a bad Starter Solenoid. I went to change the starter out and the solenoid just practically spun when trying to remove the wires. Bought a cheap one for $60 on amazon. Not sure of the quality but it fit perfect and fired right up. The reviews were all good so hopefully it wont be an issue.

Pretty sure I'm going to get rid of this car. I bought it as a project/something to tinker with and have ended up spending wayyyy too much on it. Looks like I might trade her in for a Pickup seeing as I need one anyhow. Not 100% positive yet but it just seems like there are issues every month or two. Hell I've only driven it 3000 miles in the 2 years I've had it due to the issues I've had! The turbo is just so damn fun, but I haven't got much use out of it to be honest.

You can spend a lot if time fixing someone's else's neglect. The prize at the end of the tunnel is a low cost yo own luxury car, but that tunnel can be long
