AC compressor leak front seal, what to replace

Post by Jackskeeper »

I have a 98 v70 awd 2.4 turbo

I went to have the Ac system recharged and they detected a leak on the front seal. The mechanic said it was best to replace the compressor and the accumulator/drier at the same time.

My question is... is this all necessary? Could a seal kit and O-rings have me blowing cold again? Do I really need to replace the whole compressor? This is a generic question related to any make and model.

Let me know your thoughts

Thanks,
R

If you're paying a mechanic, then yes replace them and get his guarantee. If you have the tools you could replace the seal on a good compressor, but that doesn't sound like the case. Also beware of the cheapest compressors. We sold a lot of them and a lot of them came back.

A "new" or good used Zexel is the only answer.

I have rebuilt AC compressor before, not worth the time or headache.

I see FCP is carrying both an OEM Valeo at 360 and an Air products at 280

I'm getting 38F temp delta on mine but I hear some compressor growl this season ( first AC use this year)

Decisions, decisions

I would go with a junkyard compressor in a heartbeat. Easy for me to say, I have a couple in the garage, but compressor failures are so uncommon that I see little risk in a used one.
