Do not put multi vehicle atf in a 4t65e!
My sister's 2005 S80 T6 with 132,600 miles transaxle was destroyed today by her independent shop. I read on here people who believe that the transaxle to be poorly built when I have read on here of all sorts of fluid other than Dextron IIIE which is the correct fluid. I personally drove the car the day it was dropped off for the entire day pryor and it was fine. I run a car with a heavy foot. When the car was delivered today I checked the fluid before driving away and noticed it smelled wrong so I asked what was used and was shown bottles saying multi car +4 made by a leading company. She drove it home slipping and the transaxle is now distroied. Just for this reason I take my Volvo cars to Volvo. We took the car straight back and it was flushed with Dextron IIIE fluid we brought back with us. Transaxle no longer slips but banges into second and bangs back to first after acceleration begins from a stop. Sad to say this happened but the wrong fluid was used to service it! So beware if you choose not to use the correct fluid for service you may buy a transaxle....

Are you sure that you don't mean "Dextron IIE"? I searched for "Dextron IIIE" and can't find any links to that anywhere. I definitely want to use the correct fluid for an up coming fluid and filter change. Thanks.

Dextron III the E just stuck in my mind from 4T65E. Volvo wants $4400.00 to replace the transaxle. Lifetime warranty. If it was mine it would be done already. She feels that the car is only worth that and is going to replace the car. It is sad as nothing was wrong and she was just doing preventive maintenance. My car got it's first transaxle service last week and I carried my own fluid in which I bought at Walmart that said Dextron II/III,Mercon in Walmart brand clearly on the front. I was never going to change it, but I had it done to prove that the failure was not due to "new" fluid in a old transmission as her shop is now claiming. They stand firm that multiple vehicle transmission fluid was not the cause. The bottle did not claim to cover Dextron III. Actually my car seems to be smoother and I put 600 miles today alone. Her car had been serviced before and mine hadn't. Her car blew quickly (while being delivered to her) mine is fine. I use my dealer only usually and they never have recommended changing it in any of my Volvos before. They balk about changing the engine oil at 3000 rather than the recommended 7500. So when Dextron III is currently available, why use something else? Good luck! June
