98v70 zimmermann rotors and akabono ceramicpads - thoughts?

Post by 98v70dad »

I'm looking the basic zimmermanns (non-drilled and non slotted = about $50.00) with ceramic akabono pads. is this a good combo or do I need drilled and slotted rotors? Your thought are appreciated. I'm tired of the black brake dust and would like to get rid of it.

I drive this car to work. I need brakes that work and great performance isn't necessary. I just need good performance.

Can't go wrong with the Zimmerman/Akebono combo. Used it many times myself. It will definitely reduce the brake dust and will stop the car just fine.

Sole reason I went with Akebono is (was) brake dust. Was tired to clean the wheels every two weeks. I don't remember when I put the Akebono things, perhaps 4-5 months ago. I haven't washed the wheels yet, and don't think I'll have to do it this year either  Not kidding, the brake dust has dissipated. They bite less than the OEM but no noise. I have no idea what brand my rotors are.

Whats is your thought on drilled and slotted zimmermanns vs just plain zimmermanns? I don't think I need drilled and slotted but I know that ceramic pads create a lot of heat. Drilled and slotted significantly increases the cost. The basic zimmermanns aren't that expensive. I am doing all 4 wheels.

If you often brake hard from high speeds, you are a lot better off with drilled or slotted since they will warp otherwise.
If it is just for that little more stopping power with normal speeds, the normal ones will be fine.

No problems with Akebonos and stock rotors. Machine the old rotors if you don't buy new ones.

I have basic Zimmerman rotors with OEM Genuine Volvo pads on all 4 corners. I like the setup a lot. No problems with fade when driving hard. The coating on the non-brake-pad part of the rotor has prevented rust.

The OEM pads can be a bit dusty... though I've seen worse.

I'm installing basic Zimmerman's and Akebono's on my XC right now. That's my prefered combo. I like that the Zimmerman's come "Z" coated and don't start rusting right away.
I had the drilled/ slotted ones on my 850 and didn't like them that much. They lasted very long but made an annoying hissing sound when braking. That's only bothersome when you drive with the windows down.
